Exhaust Fumes
Getting exhaust smell when driving with the windows up. In AZ that doesn't happen all that often but when it does it is annoying. Pic shows situation. Could I have cut the exhaust tips too short and the air from under the car is pushing the fumes into the car?
Other ideas?

Put on a catalytic converter and it will smell less. Roll up the windows and use the AC.
Yea, right.

Yes. Add 2 or 3 inches to those tips and that will help.

Close your rear 1/4 windows, believe it, exhaust backwash.

As I suspect mestein is getting at, old/damaged heat exchangers can sometimes cause exhaust fumes to get in the passenger cabin. Watch out for CO if that's the case.

Bingo. It's very common on the 914's that I play with. Plug one end and do a smoke test. CO will kill you.

Thank you for all of the answers/suggestions. Bought the car in '11 in Petaluma with no heat exchangers. Took it back east in '13 and had them added, since I would need heat. So the units are not that old. I will of course check them. The issue really shows up with all windows up and the 1/4 windows closed. Rear deck is just held down with the rubber straps.
Will go for a little run today. Cool enough in AZ to have the windows up

Are your heat exchangers new SSI’s or used steel ones.

abides.

Does it happen when you are driving or stopped?
Do you have seals around the engine tin?

they are used steel. Stopped or driving. Moving along seems to make things better. Need to verify the compleleness of the tin seal

There is a rubber boot that goes between the nose of the transmission and the hole through the back of the tunnel where the shift rod goes through. If this is missing, dislodged, or torn, fumes can get into the cabin. Pop the cover over shift coupler and take a peek.
