Oil Tank Volume while Running

any measurements, or even thoughts on how much oil is in the oil tank at say, mid engine speeds - 4k or so?

On a warm oil change, there is usually less than 2 quarts in the case that would be scavanged
Momentarly. The rest is in the tank, possibly 9.5 quarts.

with approx 12 litres in the sump I reckon 9 litres of that will come out on a warm oil change the rest is somewhere in the system so IŽd have to agree with Bruces assessment

I get a pretty steady indication on the oil level gauge and can see the level change when revving the motor. There's no calibration, of course, but given the distance between MIN and MAX on the dipstick is only 6cm (a couple of quarts, I think) I suspect the change due to higher RPM is a small fraction of a quart.

Since the pressure circuit is always full, the only place for oil to go is the heads and case. The pump output at 4K is going to be nearly quadruple the idle flow (minus whatever oil is recirculating through the pressure relief), so the flow from the bearings and cam spray bars is increased and the holdup in the heads, oil return tubes and case will be increased. The level at the oil pump pickup would need to be slightly higher to increase the scavenge circuit flow and the levels everywhere else would have to increase slightly to increase the flow to the suction inlet (since that is all gravity flow).

Not sure why you are asking, and don’t forget about the long oil lines and front fender oil cooler, if you car has one. That colds a bit of oil as well, and with eh hoses and tanks on the top, it won’t drain back to the engine, and out, even on a warm change (I don’t think).

Nope, the oil in the lines and the cooler stay in place during an oil change. Some people will put in an air valve to force the oil out of the lines and the cooler to do a full change. I see that as a potential leak, so I just ignore the two quarts or so in the lines and cooler.

My maths.

12 litres in the system. two or three are in the oil coolers and the lines. I only get about a cup full out of the sump in an oil change (so I don't even drain the sump any more), so that's about nine litres in the tank.

My car's oil doesn't seem to run backwards into the sump like some of you guy's cars do.

How do you only get a cup out of the sump? You should get 2 to 3 quarts out of the crankcase.

When the engine, and hence the oil pump is turned off, oil will drain from the tank which is higher up than the bottom of the engine. I drain my engine on every oil change and get well over a quart for sure. I would guess two quarts, I never measure it, it just goes in the old oil container.

When I rebuilt the engine, I also changed the hose to the thermostat since it was weeping at the crimp and was the original hose I suspect. I also replaced the two short hoses to the cooler for the same reason, they were wet on the ends at the crimps. It took right at 14 quarts to fill it to the point 1/2 way between the marks on the dip stick as I remember. It has been a while. I put in the standard 11 quarts, went for a drive, and return to find it low, and kept adding until it was at the right level when at 190 degrees at idle.

had an SC let loose along the front straight at Summit Point. I can tell you there is a whole bunch of oil that finds its way immediately to the track. Probably a bazillion quarts or so it seemed
