Vin & engine numbers matching

I was looking at purchasing a Porsche but its no where near me. I do have the Vin and engine numbers. Is there any way to check if they match short of ordering a COA?

Thanks,

Sam

COA won't tell you this anymore.

There is no correlation between the vin and the engine number.

No easy or quick way to verify anymore. Ask the seller if the car still has its service and maintenance booklet. The selling dealer was supposed to write the engine number on the front page, although that wasn't always done.

The engine number is supposed to be the last 8 digits of the original owners social security number / his zip code.

Uncle billy, at first I didn’t believe you, then I remembered that they changed my zip code several years after I bought the car!

Sam, unless you have something like the Maintenance record book with the engine # recorded, then the CoA is really the only way to know the original engine. The new PPS or (expensive) CTC may confirm the engine # if it is original. Given the numbers I can make a rough guess if the engine could be a match based on my data. Or for a price I can purchase the data and make up a pseudo-CoA for you based on factory data; and most of the info will be a little better than the old CoA.

unclebilly, that only applies to Trabant's.
