Jon get Wayne's book 101 projects for your 911 and his 911 engine rebuilding manual. Between those, a workshop manual (Bentley is the best) and this list there isn't anything you can't do on your car.

disappear as in you move left of the 3-4 plane and push up and there's no click into gear? or as in it grinds away?

What does it do when it's cold? It is nice and tight when cold?

you might want to check your shifter bushings. Mine were broken when I first bought my car and it stiffened up the shifter consiterably. To do that you unbolt the shifter housing and lift it up under there there should be a cup looking plastic peice. It's probably pretty worn.

BTW Wayne 101 projects is an EXCELLENT resource for the first time porsche owner. It includes instructions on changing this bushing and the other shifter bushings

Bad shift bushing generally just lead to sloppy shifter. Of course unless they have been replaced, 76 Targa probably needs to replace those anyway. More likely a misaligned shift coupler and/or worn out coupler bushings. You should read this thread: coupler & shifter adjustment and this thread: ?????worn shifter coupling bushings

actually you don't have to look at the trans, first do the bushings, shifter coupler and alignment.

I agree with everyone. Get 101 projects and Waynes Engine book. Also, Bentley is essential.

I got my 87 last fall and hadn't turned a wrench since the '60's. With the help of this BBS, I just got through with a complete suspension and brake rebuild. It was fun. There is a ton of help available if you just search the BBS archives and ask questions. I've also found that there is no such thing as a dumb question.

I've asked what I thought were some dumb ones but these guys really know what they are doing and help.

Happy driving.

Dave

The fact that you asked first about checking the oil puts you immediately into the upper percentile! Quite a few new owners have adjusted their oil level with the engine stopped and have had to deal with a huge oily mess. Just check the archives....

Looks like you are off to a great start!
