Did they change Mobil 1 15w-50 or just the bottle?
I posted this to Renn / 964 but since this concerns all air cooled I'm gonna ask the crew here -
Last time I bought 15w50 M1 - not that long ago - it had red text on the container. Now its grey. Mobil's tech specs state "Updated October 2019" and show nice high zinc/zddp and specifically call out flat tappet applications. I like all of that. But what I don't know is if the "redesign" changed the formula or is just a graphic design exercise? https://www.mobil.com/lubricants/-/m...ide-rev-31.pdf OLD ![]() NEW

This is surely a silly question but there's something confusing me: what's the benefit of Mobil 1 15W50 with respect to Mobil 1 5W50?
Based only on the numbers, it would look like they have the same viscosity at high temperature but at low temps, the 5W50 has a lower viscosity (i.e. it has less change of viscosity with temperature). Is 15W50 maybe better to avoid oil leaks when the engine is cold?

Good question. Its got nearly as much Zinc/ZDDP as 15w50. It is one of the viscoscities Porsche offers. I don't know how to evaluate if 15w or 5w is a better side to err on from their own recommend 10w60 (to 3 liters)
from https://www.porsche.com/usa/accessoriesandservices/classic/genuineparts/producthighlights/motoroil/ Developed as a 20W-50 oil for 356, 914 and early air-cooled 911 models with a displacement of up to 2.7 liters Developed as a 10W-60 oil for air-cooled 911 models with a displacement of up to 3.0 liters

Hmm perhaps the Valvoline 20w50 i have been using on my 3.2 should be reconsidered to a 10w60 synthetic?
I was told years ago the 20w/ cold # kept more oil on the parts than a lower # at cold start. |
