What Transmission Problem Could This Be?
Merry Christmas Pelicans!
While on a spirited run this morning, I was shifting from 2nd to 3rd at 6k rpm when I heard a bang & couldn't get into 3rd. I stopped. put the car in neutral, killed the engine. Engaged 1st, started the car & was able to move. Shifted to 2nd, still ok but couldn't get into 3rd. Drove it home in 2nd gear. When I stopped at the toll, clutch wasn't working & the car lurched forward. Luckily, the barrier lifted & got home in 2nd. I'm letting the car cool down before inspecting but what do you guys think is the problem? Worn clutch? Shift fork? Car is a 1988 Carrera. TIA. |

Some of them still have the original
rubber center clutch disc, which breaks up and blocks proper clutch disengagement.

I stopped and talked to a nice gent, sure enough the original rubber centered clutch finally let go. That guy was raising cain how Porsche screwed up with their rubber centered clutches - after 40 years! |

Here's one I recently pulled from my 87. I think it's the second clutch for my car since it had the updated clutch arm bushings.
![]() The part has been replaced with a spring center disc 950-116-012-54. |

Hi Harold. Did you do replace clutch yourself? I'm thinking of tackling this myself although I've never done this before.

mo-mon,
Yes, I'm doing the work myself on the clutch replacement but have not gotten it reinstalled since I'm working through a split case rebuild first. The Bentley manual does a good job of explaining the engine/transaxle drop, separation and clutch replacement. During the removal I bent the crossmember M12 bolt mounts. This is a common problem since the bolt and crossmember corrode together. If you don't have a lift, it's difficult getting the car raised high enough to remove the engine/transaxle. |

I do have the Bentley & the G50 pdf (Thanks KTL) but no lift. Hopefully the smaller RUF tribute rear bumpers that I have allow a lower height for removal.

It takes awhile but you can build platforms (ex. 2×6) for both the jack and stands. Just go slowly and think safety.
