MFI plastic intake stack mod question
I recently worked on an authentic '73 Carrera RS which had some rather curious mods done to it. The most noteworthy was the non-original plastic intake stacks.
The entire MFI system was a hodge-podge of parts. The pump was not original, but a '71 S pump that was presumably rebuilt to RS spec. The throttle bodies lacked vacuum ports on Cylinders 1 and 4 for the vacuum retard on the distributor. And my favorite, the 911 T plastic intake stacks that were somehow bored out to S/RS diameter. Up until now I thought the only way to upgrade my '72 T MFI was to buy some S intake stacks, or find some Magnesium intake stacks and have them bored out to S spec. I'd like to keep my original plastic stacks so I can keep the rest of the '72to'73-only parts of the system. So, this leads to my questions. Who can bore out plastic intake stacks? Where are they? How is it done? Thanks in advance.

Just have whoever does the job to use a zero-rake cutter. (safest bet for cutting unknown plastics)

Thanks for the tip Glen. I'd still like to know who can do this though. Anyone have a recommendation in So Cal?
And Denis, thanks. But you'd need a mighty large tip for that dremel. Not to mention the fact that high speed tips just melt the plastic. But I know you want to try anyhow, right?? ![]()

I talked to the guy who does this, the cost is $300 for both stacks. He can do either plastic or metal stacks. I was going to send mine to him but I just found real 's' throttle/stacks.
![]() ![]() I can find his number if anyone is interested.

Would clear paint make it too glossy?
Hi all:
I'm getting ready to paint my RSR replica black in a few weeks. I was going to paint it with a shot of clear coat but I've heard that for the early cars, clear coats just don't "look right". Any opinions? thanks. Felmir |

Dremel tool to bore out important parts like this....what a silly idea. Tyson, I've got a hole saw kit with several saw bits and a good cordless drill. Just send those stacks or whatever, and I'll bore them for considerably less than $300.

Tyson could you post a pic or sketch of the stack to help me understand what it is you are trying to do to it. Are you just trying to open the ID? Boring is a pretty simple machining operation.

i'd think a good drum sander in different sizes would be better then a hole saw...just a cleaner effect...a drum sander on a drill press with a jig to hold the stacks???
maybe make tapered cone...put sandpaper on it...that may work MJ |

Wow, thats crazy. This whole thread, i was gonna write that my friend Richard was the only person i have ever heard of boring out plastic stacks. I do know that he wasn't extremely happy with the results he had had, last time we spoke. We started talking about boring out plastic stacks about 18 months ago and he said that i should bore out a set of early mag stacks. He had a set and i was able to talk him out of them.
I would try to find a set of those and go that route. Richard did bore out my mag stacks but it was alot of work with the biggest friggin reamer you've ever seen. It had to be sharpened half way through the process. The mag stacks look period and you can get classic looking velocity stacks from PMO. BTW-What size bore did you want? The '73 S stacks are hardly Unobtanium. If you do talk to Richard, ask him about his Porsche's. Paul

I've got plastic stacks and "40mm butterflies". I have no idea if the stacks were boed out.
I will try and find out. It was either done in New Zealand or Australia though, so not much help.
