Engine Rebuild - Hardware List, Replate or Purchase
I know there are things that it just makes sense to replate but I know there is a TON of stuff we can cheaply replace via belmetric. So my question is ... is there a master list of every washer, bolt, and nut needed for a rebuild.
I know I can look at the online parts catalog but I was just curious if anyone has put together an order for hardware and might have it on hand or should I undertake the project section by section on my SC engine and build a list/order. If this is something that doesn't exist I can build a google doc based on the parts catalog and we all chime in.

I don't know of a kit or concise list, but when I did my top end rebuild, I did as you mention and used PET and ordered all my nuts, bolts, and washers as I saw fit. For every project I know I have coming up, I just put together a quick spreadsheet of things I need to order and find it all on Belmetric. In general I tend to keep a lot of spare M12/10/8/6/4 nuts, bolts, and washers (flat, wave, lock) sitting in containers, as they seem to cover most things on the car.
That said, I did pick up a gasket kit from here that had all the engine gaskets as well as most of the aluminum crush washers, as those seem to be a little trickier to get ahold of (or more likely, I forgot to account for). |

Wayne’s rebuild book has a pretty good list in the back with pictures.
PET in pdf form from Porsche Classic is 100% complete |

Make a list as you take it off the car. A lot of guys care about the original hardware so they will replate even the smaller nuts, bolt and washers.

I have everything organized in labeled bags so I can go from there. The PET is solid guide. I do think I want to plate only the essentials and order the common stuff. I think a list off all washers, nuts, and bolts would be good to have to make ordering easier when doing a rebuild.
Wayne's book does have some nice lists and exploded views but not enough information to order the above.

I bought the Pelican Parts hardware super kit back in 2014.
Has all the nuts, bolts and washers. Comes with a detailed list of what they are and where they go. The price was well worth it. |

It depends if you want originality or not. I re-plated every nut, bolt and washer on my car. It wasn't crazy expensive.
Some nuts and washers you can't re-use like the nylock nuts and aluminum crush washers so buy them new. Most bolts have original markings which are worth having re-plated if they are in good enough condition. Regular nuts and washers are cheaper to buy new than re-plate so that is a route you could go. Most plating companies have a minimum charge ($100 or there abouts) so make sure you have enough stuff to hit that or go in with a friend. Doing it over I would re-plate all the bolts and specialty nuts / washers (and any other misc engine parts). Buy from our host the nylock nuts (as they come in Yellow Zinc) and all the various aluminum washers. All the regular nuts and washers can be found very cheap on a site like Belmetric. Cheers, -Kav. |
