going early
so when I bought this I was wondering about living with a "primitive" car in LA. Sure, driving a '67 bug with no AC, etc, as main transportation is no problem when you're 20 years old. But at 40? After doing the experiment, I am pleased to report that at least in this instance I'm still 20. But then the next thought that creeps into my warped little head is, if a '79 is civilized enough, why not go early?
Abandon the SCWDP and find a nice E or R Grupper? Egad. I figure it would be about a wash for initial investment. But longer term I assume the SC would be cheaper, as it's at 51K right now so it has a lot of miles in it. Maybe SSI and a ducktail on the SC would do the trick. I guess I've been staring at the pictures of long noses in Morgan's book too long...especially the signal orange, olive, aubergine, etc. OK, story time. Who's gone progressively earlier with their 911s? Conversely, who has gone later? Regrets or lessons learned? |

nostatic, we started with the 95 993 in late 2001, and added the 73E in the Fall of 2002. If I had to choose between them, I'd probably keep the E. I hope I never have to make that choice (knock on wood).

no,not bored. Just enamored with early cars in loud colors.
I try to avoid coming early, but going is event dependent. |

hahaha...I am in the same boat but one step ahead
SC has 193K on it!!!! and I've got the eary 911 targa already orange... (did you miss the thread? I thought you'd be the first to respond to a signal orange paint job!!) can't beat SC reliability...it is a great first-timer 911...won't brake the bank while you learn the idiosyncracies of 911ownership...and let's you fall in love without hating the car for draining your wallet... but the early cars are the 911 in their purest form...not better...but different...I am keeping the SC as a daily driver till the early targa is done...after that I don't know if I can afford to own 2 911s... |

I was speechless at the sight of your signal orange car. Glad to see you picked the right color

All it takes is a pair of fenders and a hood...

How about body mods to your SC to give it that "early look" combined with that "SC with only 51K miles" condition?
After all, rumour has it that Porsche managed to improve their cars from decade to decade . . . (ducking)

Despite being very happy with my 88 Carrera, I have found myself looking at the Early 911S and R-Gruppe pages recently. Maybe its just wanting what you don't have. There is an orange early 70s Targa near where I live. When I first saw it I thought it was hideous. Now I kinda like it. I never liked the duck tail look, but now I do. But if it is loud nostalgia you want, Nostatic, why not go back further ... put on your bell-bottoms and get into a 356 in Janis Joplin psychadelic colour scheme.
On the other hand, think of all the extra maintencance issues that are going to plague you with a 30 year old car, including rust.

I've gone from 73 to 71. Next up will likely be a 67S!

yeah, I was thinking about that. Curt's backdate of his '88 is very nice. A couple fenders, a hood, maybe a little engine tweak and it's rust-free and low miles fun. Hmmm...
Doug, would that keep me in good graces? I try to avoid being killt. |

Ah well, Todd, I think it's that 40 yr. thing (just turned 40 in November). I've got my '87 coupe but that wasn't enough so I picked up a '65 356C restoration project as well. Since we only have a 2 car garage and the fiance has a nice Audi she (and most of my friends) thinks I'm nuts.
