How interchangeable are steering wheels between models?

I'm curious how different the 1960's - 1980's steering wheels are. If I want to put a 911 steering wheel in a 914, or a 944 steeting wheel in a 911. Basically, are the mounts all the same, or how do they differ?

Steering wheel interchange

Here's a rough break-down:

These models are all interchangeable as far as splines go:
914/6 up to 1971, 356 from 1958 to 1965, 911 up to June 1974

These models interchange with each other, but not the group above:
944 from 1985 1/2, 951 between 1986 and 1989, 911C2, 911C4, 911RS from 1989 to 1994

These models are interchangeable spline fits, but not with any other groups:
911 after July 1974, 930, 911 Carrera

The following splines are not interchangeable with any other cars even within this group:
914 up to 1971, 914 up from 1972 to 1976.

I hope that's clear. If you have a specific interchange in mind, let me know. I'll check it out.

Wow. OK, so the early 911 really isn't interchangeable with any other car. The pre '74 914/4 may work, but does this require using some sort of adapter ring? Is that what the rear hub cover is?

Anything from a 944/24/51 may interchange with each other or, the later C2s etc., but not with any other 911's.

Very Impressive Ray. Good information for a compatibility matrix.

As far as I was aware, only the 914/6 wheel has the same splines as the early 911. This was the steering wheel that was used on the 73 RS.
380 mm dia instead of the std 400 mm. Have one on my 72S. Looks std until you're behind the wheel, then vive la difference!

Sorry to bring this old thread but It did not clarify my question...

What other Porsche smaller steering wheels will fit my '69 912? Mine is too large!!!

Thanks,

Jose
