1970 911E yard find.
I don't know if this is the appropriate place for this thread. But i'm picking up a 1970 911E sometime this week. It has been sitting out in a yard for 15 + years. The engine and trans where pulled and rebuilt but never re installed. The trans is in the back seat and the engine is missing but if found will be coming with the car. The car is in ruff shape (ruff is putting it nicely) The car was repainted in the mid 80s and from the looks of it the entire car was glazed when painted. The hood is trashed the passenger front fender and quarter panel maybe salvageable. The floors from what I can tell are not to terrible but they have the usual rust spots by the rear suspension. My main concern is the roof and front windshield/ wiper panel has a lost of rust I don't know the extent of it yet.
A few pics I meant to take more, but I was trying to get the wheels off to have new tire put on to make it easier to load up some time this week. ![]() ![]() ![]()

That's going to be quite a project. Keep us updated.
For the record this is what i love about the current demand for anything long nose! It means anything is a possible restoration. A few years ago none of us would have stopped to look at this car. Now I find myself thinking - well it's pretty rusty but it could be saved! Let's all hope and pray it is. PS what did you mean by the statement " the entire car was glazed"?

I don't think it is possible to save much of anything on that car. Good luck.

Immediately remove all body panels, hood, trunk, doors any thing loose have it media stripped and have them stripped and epoxy primed. Remove front rear suspension, steering rack etc take them to sandblasted. Remove everything from the car and have the shell media blasted and primed. Them begin

Some of the suspension mechanicals and the remaining glass looks OK but that body looks severely race lightened to me. Make sure your head stays in charge.

I don't think it's "economically reasonable" to save that car, as opposed to starting with something in better shape...
Side note: The rear torsion bar hole seems mighty close to the rear fender opening, for a 70 ( which should be LWB). Then again maybe it is because the fender edge rusted off... Check the VIN ? Last edited by Typ616; 08-06-2014 at 05:19 AM.. |

PART IT OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As a longhood owner (1973.5T) I would tell you that every part that can be removed from connectors, to seats, glass to hinges, switches to panels, etc, will yield you far more $$$$$$$ then you can imagine. With the cost of longhoods up in the stratosphere EVERYTHING longhood has value and folks will pay the price. Take a look at Ebay or the market here on Pelican. I do not throw anything out anymore. You might have found a small gold mine....................in parts. The cost of rebuilding that rusted hulk? As much as four di-lithium Starship crystals!!!!! Good luck Bob 1973.5T keep me on your parts sales list |

I think the two most valuable components of a 911E are:
1) the correct engine with fuel injection 2) the chassis serial number ;-)

I'm with Typ616. Check the VIN. Its got vent windows (pre-69), and the door handle looks like the early style (pre-68). Cant tell if that's a smashed battery box hanging under the LF fender, or not. Side mirror is '72 and later.
I know guys get excited about finding just about any old P-wagen these days, but I can't help thinking some of them should just be left to die in peace. |

Can someone please explain "Longhood". I'm from Scotland, it's not a term I'm familiar with. I understand "hood" = bonnet in the UK.
I thought all hoods were the same, do certain models have different hoods styles? Hopefully not a stupid question........ |

"Longhood" refers to 911s from model year 1964 through MY 1973. In 1974, the mandated "5MPH" safety bumper inspired redesign resulted in a shorter hood (bonnet).

Nice one.....Cap'n
Never heard of that. I assume it's a U.S. feature and not ROW cars. As they say, every day is a school day. Thanks |

I think ROW cars had the same bumpers as the US version beginning in 1974. You may not have had the hydraulic bumper "shocks" that we got, but the cast bumpers would have been standard. Look at some pictures of pre-1974 and '74 and newer 911s.
