If anyone does go for the McMasters rivets, since they come in a pack of 100, I'd be interested in reducing your inventory. ;>) thanks

I always bought my rivets from Metric Multistandard Corp, perfect look and fit. Last time I bought I had to get 1000.

Not missing anything. I think they are a viable option for those less-obsessed among us

I ended up ordering slightly larger rivets from McMaster and will turn them down in the lathe.

I measured the actual diameter of the DIN 661 rivets yesterday and they are 4.90mm, so about .004" under nominal. The question is a similar nominal clearance on the standard sized rivets will exist, and you're going to get closer to .012" clearance, which is going to seem pretty loose (maybe?)

I’m actually on your side Johnny- I think getting the right size is best. - I am wondering how DP is going to turn tiny soft aluminum rivets down in a lathe. That seems really hard lol

Hey glen can I buy 50 from you?

I’m all out of rivets, used or sold them all. When I zip gun drive the rivets with the mandrel, the rivet expands into the hole. Been doing this 20 years or more, usually mixing hubs and fans, never a problem, never balanced them.

Hello, any one of you guys have extra unwanted rivets for sale? I am in the process of restoring my fan.

Very helpful thread, as I've never had to deal with solid rivets before!

Does anybody know the correct length to get a nice dome shaped rivet at the end? The rule of thumb seems to be 1,5x the diameter in "stickout" before hammering, so approx 7.5mm. I just don't know how much the thickness of the fan blade plus hub is, since mine is still installed on the car.

A guy on a German Porsche forum mentioned he was going to use 5x16mm DIN 661 rivets, however he never came back to say how that worked out for him.

Cheers,
Lukas

Not difficult at all if you have a 5c collet setup.

Can you guys explain how you rivet the fan back on the hub, what tool(s) you use, etc.? Thanks!

.009 is kinda a big deal for proper fit

I would say that .009" is loose for what we are doing here. Just my .02, but in the game of materials and fits .009" is a mile. I work in .0005" all day and we do all kinds of fits for all kinds of materials. I would want to be within a couple thousands of original if it was me, and I may or may not be as anal as Jonny...

Nice this thread poped-up as I am just looking for solution, where or by myself assemble my fan to the hub. Ok, rivet specs are not confirmed yet, but some ok-ones are. If I buy some, do I can set them myself with the rivet hand-tools (no air gun, just normal hammer or will that be a PITA? If I look at those nice round heads after, I doubt a non-pro could do that, right?

Ive turned some on the lathe and also used a sleeve of soft aluminum over the rivet for the ones that were just a hair too thin. Obviously easier to use exact size if you can purchase them in cheap quantities.
