Rocker shaft seal?
Is this a leaking rocker shaft seal? It’s on the exhaust side at the front of the motor.
Notice the intake side is dark but not wet. Seals inside the valve covers are dry. Or is that large plug leaking? Thanks ![]() ![]() |

dang look at those rubber valve gaskets. Yeah looks like the freeze plug and probably the rocker shafts. You can add the RS seals on the shafts.

Does PP sell RSR seals? I could not find them. That seems to be the preferred kind. Can I seal the freeze plug like we do for the ones behind the flywheel, or does it have to be replaced? Thanks |

Once you are in this far, you assume that everything leaks.
1. The large plug is installed dry, but I would put some sealant on it 2. The upper and lower rocker shafts can use the RSR seals 3. The oil plug needs new orings 4. Ripped valve cover gasket? Replace with conventional gasket sprayed with copper spray. Removal will be more difficult, but there is a price to be paid for a tight seal.

My engine leaked a lot and it drove me nuts. I installed RSR seals, which helped a lot, but it still leaked in the area around the plug. The next time I had the engine out, I sealed the plug with JB Weld. The engine hasn't leaked a drop since.

I would not use sealer on the valve cover gaskets unless you want to spend a LOT of time and cussing getting all the bits of gasket off later. Looks like that lower rocker shaft is too far into the short boss. Check the rest for proper placement.

Are RSR seals a brand name or is this just what everyone calls them? Where can I get a set? Thanks |

You can find the RSR rocker shaft seals on Turbokraft's site. That's where I got mine.

Even with RSR seals I still had a leak at #1 exhaust and lesser leak at #2. I found the #1 shaft had come loose.
I used the CE dry fit method (IIRC) for installing the shafts and that fixed the loose/leaking shafts.

911 099 103 52. Torque used shafts to 20#, not the factory spec of 11# when everything was new and perfect.

They are rather annoying to install. You slide one side into the slot with your thumb, then stretch it around, walk it side to side so the sides go in, then finally let it go and hope it goes in straight and flat. And they don't stretch easy.

Glad to know I am not the only one who fussed with this. "Rather annoying" is a perfect description.
The extra torque used to be #15 lbs/ft. Good to know 20 can work. Interesting to hear of a cam end seal leaking. Mine have never looked like they did, but a bit of epoxy over an in place part isn't hard to do and can't hurt anything, even the budget. |

revised shaft sealing
Chris Seven was working on a better shaft attachment design, but alas he passed away. It has always seemed to me that extending the tapered shaft end pieces and putting a seal underneath the widened ends could work wonders:
![]() Like these, but with seals outside the shaft bores: ![]() To be sure, the exterior surfaces where the seals would go are slightly rough castings, but maybe the right kind of flexible seal would do the job? |
