82 SC cam timing

I'm going to be dropping my engine and transaxle in my 82 911 SC soon to rebuild the tranny. While it's out, I'm considering retarding the cams 6 degrees to match the Euro Carrera 3.0 and the 78 & 79 US spec SC's. I've retarded the cams on several other cars I've owned and it's helped move the power band up a little higher in the rev range.

My question is, has anyone else done this mod, and is it effective with the small intake ports, runners and airbox ports of the US spec 1980 through 83 SC?

Regards

Retarded cams are the way to go and if it were my car, I wouldn't hesitate to do the same on an 80 SC.

I am currently installing 964 cams in my 82 sc. Should these be retarded also? If so, how much, 6 degrees?

thanks

Ian,

The reason to retard the cam timing is to give better pull up high in the RPM range, which the stock SC's would benefit from. SC's usually are pooped out by 5500 RPM with stock cams. If youre installing the 964's, you'll be impressed by how well they pull up to redline. You'll find that they will pull hard all the way through the rev band and will want to continue pulling hard past redline, definitely unlike stock cams. If I were you, I'd advance the cam timing (upper specs of the cam timing range) to gain more low end torque. Torque is GOOD!!!

Porsche played w/ cam timing from first SC, (retarded), to 2nd generation SC, (advanced), and finally settled in the middle for Carreras and 964s, if not mistaken. It certainly will not hurt anything to retard yours, I was considering it at one time, but from what the experts tell me, you will barely notice the difference. Moves the peak torque around by ~couple hundred RPMs.

Charlie is right about the characteristics of 964 cams, but for this reason I plan on just setting mine stock 964/3.2 spec, which is in the middle of the two SC specs, if memory serves. Good luck, and if you change them report back here for the data bank, OK?
