Is This Power Window Regulator Repairable?
Hi everyone! Its been a while...
So my 83 SC driver side window regulator broke. I cant remember if it went up but not down or down but not up, but it refused to work in both directions. Im on a bit of a budget so I cant quite replace it with a new one at this time. Upon taking it apart I noticed the little zinc slotted post that holds the end of the clock spring was at the bottom of the door. It's easy enough to add a threaded standoff and grind a slot in it but I noticed some other things which lead to more questions: ![]() 1. Does the clock spring need to act in both directions (up and down window travel?) or just one? If just one then I can just insert a bolt and a couple of hex nuts where the red circle is and make sure the clock spring tab is on the correct side. If it has to work in both directions then Ill need to add a standoff and cut a slot in it to capture the clock spring tab and make sure it stays in the red circle at all times. ![]() 2. These 3 fasteners are kind of wonky. The upper 2 posts are the ones that mount the regulator assembly to the inner door skin. 3. The lower hex bolt holds a kind of bump stop for the end of the regulator travel. Are they supposed to be angled like that or are they tweaked? ![]() 4. Should the regulator hit the bump stop where it is currently contacting or should it contact on that bigger beige plastic surface? ![]() Thanks in advance.

The clock spring gets wound tighter to fit on the post that is missing (so past the two existing posts). As I remember, I used a 5/16" carriage bolt with multiple nuts to make up the missing post. I would guess the stop is a little tweeked, possibly because the cushion is not flat. Perhaps file the stop flat and adjust pieces to hit the stop correctly.

![]() Ill try flattening the stop mounting area with a vise and filing the stop itself too.

Thanks for the pointers everyone.
I got it fixed with a M6 carriage bolt leftover from a Harbor Freight work bench build and a couple of M6 hex nuts! Clamped it in a vise and with a pair of vise grips I was able to get the end of the spring behind the nuts with no issue. I removed the stop, tapped the metal flat with a hammer, and reinstalled it. I filed the contact surface on the stop flat too and now it works as intended. The angled posts I left as is because my door sheet metal is a bit tweaked as well and it matches the positions of the posts. ![]() Re-installed it and it works much better now. Hopefully this is good for a few more years.
