the pivot was removed later and one of the 4 mounting bosses were used as the pivot point, you can see it in the last picture center top

Yes, Dr Gerry, our 3.2s have one. I too could not find a replacement part so I decided to build one from a solid piece of steel dowel and tack weld in place. Mine split in two and is still hanging on.

Feel around inside the bottom of the door, probably the very front of the door to find what is missing.

The tab on the spring goes through the slot in the pivot. Both of mine broke off and fell to the bottom of the door. I heard one of them break and fall. I think they are swaged in place. The spring tab rotates about 90 deg and stops at the mounting boss near the top of the picture. With less tension on the helper spring your windows will go up more slowly. Live with slow windows, rig up a replacement pivot pin or replace the whole regulator ($$$).

Take a trip to your local RC hobby shop. Find something like this. It fits on the end of an RC airplane engine so that you can mount a spinner on the prop. Bingo. You've got a new post for the spring.

Me too
I've got precisely the same problem, and found a sheared-off "spring retainer" in the door bottom.
Not a big problem to simulate the retainer with nuts and bolts (or similar), but what's the technique for retensioning the spring? ![]() |

The retaining pin is not sold separately - msterling is correct - it is a discrete part that is swaged into the hardware, but has no part number as it is considered part of the regulator. It is made of pot metal and is under-designed for it's job - deforms too easily.
Ironically, the true pivot never seems to fail, but is sold alone. I replaced mine with some 1/4-20 hw (bolt & modified carriage nut). sky1jord - I sacrificed a short length of copper tubing (before the price went up) to get some leverage on compressing the spring. Spring retainer that falls out: ![]() I wound up removing the green angle from my 'stop' ![]() winding the spring ![]()

Thanks to all
Gerry - Red '88 Targa, just like yours but a little younger and a little further south. (I used to live on 17th St. in MB and also in Hermosa, but that was a different life - I was dragged out kicking and screaming)
Steely Dan - Thanks for the picture, I got it. I also have a clone of your "retainer that falls out" I'm way late in saying it, but this forum is absolutely incredible. I hope over time I can make some contribution(s) that repay at least some of I've learned here. |

If you look at the picture provided...
![]() ...you can see the circular mark on the right side of the slot/hole where the spring retainer was. As it came undone it was rocking/working for a while. So yes, there is a missing part. Either it is in the door, it fell out of the door, or it was removed at some point. There are some posts relating to how various people replaced this if you search for them. There are a couple ways to skin this cat.
