911 SC script color
Since I no longer drive my SC regularly at triple digit speeds, I’m considering converting my 1979 back to the original look (without a whale tail).I learned the hard way, so this time I purchased a separate engine lid to paint and add hardware to.
The 911 SC script being sold by Porsche on Pelican is black. Mine is more pewter in color and for the life of me I never recall it ever being black, and I’ve owned this car 37 years. Is mine just faded to this color or did Porsche at some point change the script color? Here is a photo of mine. ![]()

Good question. Mine was similar on my black car. It is more chrome-like. Most of the ones I’ve seen on other cars are satin black. I always suspected that a previous owner had it refinished or someone sold aftermarket versions in the past. In fact, now that I think about it, I believe there is a black one in my box of stuff that came with the car.

according to my humble logic, this:
first produced 77 cars until 78 still had the silver trim option. so in case silver trim was chosen, you got the silverish 911SC-crest. later cars second half of 79 to 82 to whom the sole black trim rule was applied received the black 911SC-crest only. BUT, as the early 77-79 black 911SC-crest were anodized the black faded away and remaining black mist was polished/grinded away during time. that is why you find "silver" 911SC-crest on cars from 79 and onwards. Also some may have even been interchanged in the last 40+ years. when in 2012 I bought my 79 SC (built in 11.1978) the black crest startet to fade lightly. I gently wet-grinded it and painted it black. now, year 2021, I deleted it completely (lid bores closed) and the crest sits as decoration behind glass with other Porsche memorablia.

So it sounds like I will have to find the script off an older SC if I want the same color on my new engine lid.

My ‘82 SC a script is kind of a satin silver. I also picked up a second used SC script over the years and it’s satin silver also.
I have no idea if they are original, but they are very well finished if they have been refinished. My car is zinn metallic if that makes a difference and has had one glass out repaint at some point. |

My 1979 (Sept 1978 build date) has chrome trim and the silverish badge. I've had the car since 1992 and it has always been this way.
Interesting theory on the bright trim coming with the silver badge. I've been assuming dark cars come with the silver badge, and light ones with black. My car is schwarz metallic. If you browse BAT for SCs, there seem to be quite a few cars with bright trim and black badges, and black trim with silver badges. I think the car color is a better indicator, but it's definitely not universal. Mark

I pulled out my Red Book to check options and Peter Morgan’s 911 book as well. It says the SC came standard with chrome trim but option M496 was the black look along with color coded headlight rims. In 1980 the black look trim was made standard for the coupe and Targa (including the targa bar). Many of the photos I’m seeing from the originals have the script in the brushed silver color, but they also don’t have the black trim. Perhaps the black trim option included the script. That would explain the differences in script color. What I didn’t see (but was looking for) in the option list was one for the script color.
Mark, I’m going to look at some of the BAT cars. Sounds like they are opposite in color and this shoots down my theory.

My ‘83 has black trim. The owner from the ‘90s had the Fuchs polished. I suspect he either bought it like this or had this badge chromed to match the wheels. I don’t think it’s original.
Anyway, here’s a pic of the original decklid. ![]()
