Thanks for any help.

Thanks, I know the exhaust stud isn't it, the link, photo, and question is referring to the head nut.

I have a head stud nut and a starter nut in the garage I'll go photograph them for you. Sorry I about the above post I didn't look closely at the description.

You're good to go.
Page 150 of the '78-'83 catalog (pdf) says that it is the same part number. (item # 17, even described as cylinder head nut!)

I don't have a starter nut. I have a head nut and threaded it to a case bolt as you can see. So I think it would work as a starter nut.

The starter cap nut has a narrower base. Simply take a head nut and grind the bottom to about 8mm and you have a factory piece.
The head nut willl work too with a good washer.

I have been using the same head nuts for years. Never seen anything different used on the starter.

Finally got it off with some hammer/Kroil/Vice grip/swearing... thankfully I have a lift cause I would have gone nuts doing this on my back. The issue is simple, the stud is too long - even for the stock starter. The barrel nut keeps on going until you have only a few mm for the wrench to contact and it strips out leaving you with nothing to loosen it with. On the new high-torque the flange is even thinner so I used two 3/8" steel spacers (one on each bolt/stud) with washers and used a regular nut (easy to get at with the smaller hi-torq) on the upper stud. When I install the stock starter into my project I will use a spacer (size TBD) and a new barrell nut, making sure I have full depth for the allen wrench!

Thanks for the help, will order new a new nut..

I've looked high and low for proper starter nuts and I'm unable to find them. Pelican Parts, our wonderful host recommended head nuts, 901 104 382 02 for my 1986 3.2 engine with a 915 gearbox.

The problem is that they (901 104 382 02 ) are a little short, about 1.2MM too short. The studs stick into the nuts too far and prevent proper tightening. The solution is a 1.9MM washer. Add in a wave washer to hold the nuts and it is perfect.

Head nut 901 104 382 02 and the original side by side

Head Nut

Orginal

Thick washer 1.2MM

Head nut on washer = 18.6MM

The starter nut has a little different profile but a head nut should work fine.

here is the original starter nut which should be on there..it is 1,8cm long, the base is smaller only 1,6cm....it should only take regular flat washer and schnorr washer on top of it..then the nut....
that is correct way

100% agree.

Where did you get those proper nuts? Did you make your own? I need to buy a lathe.

The reason these are laying around is people use a head nut instead.
