Installing extra dashboard fog light switch for exhaust control valves

Hi all,

I'm planning the installation of my somewhat exotic exhaust setup on my 1987 Targa, and I want to sanity check my thinking.

My exhaust setup is using a GT3 muffler with custom headers, that allow switching between primary and secondary. See details in Project: 997/991 GT3 exhaust on 911 3.2



To control the vacuum valves I'm planning on using an electronic switch from MaxSpeed that is controlled with a switch.



Here I'm thinking to install an extra fog light switch in my dashboard, as my 87 Targa doesn't have the dedicated rear light switch, and got an empty spot.



Parts needed for a new foglight switch:
- Knob: 911-613-028-10
- Rosette: 911-613-213-03
- Switch: 911-613-147-00
- Cap: 911-613-234-02-01C

Lastly, I'm thinking to have a custom button cap 3d printed, with an exhaust illustration on, to make it 👌

Does anyone have experience in installing another fog light switch? Was it straightforward?

It’s very easy to install another switch
Pelican even has a tech article on installing a rear fog light that covers it .
I just had a dash recovered and forget to tell them to give me another hole instead of the blank , so I bought a set of disposable scalpels off Amazon to do it myself .

Installing the switch into the dash is super easy, getting access to the rear of the dash requires the removal of all the blower stuff which is a real pain and the space is super confined. Not an insurmountable task but it took the better part of an afternoon for me to install a new fog light switch.

I would re omens lifting the front of the car as hunching over and trying to work in that space will be a less than pleasant experience. Also, packing blankets in the trunk to lean, lay on will be a lifesaver.

if your car doesn't have a rear wiper or intensive washer option, you could also use either of these cavities in the instrument panel for the switch. I used the rear wiper one to install the switch for the manual override of my oil cooler fan & yes, I used a porsche rear wiper switch. Easy access.

Could you pull the head unit to gain access? I installed a rear fog switch in my 90 through that area after drilling a hole in the blank location.

I'd take this suggestion one step further and mount that same rocker switch (much simpler than foglight switch btw) on the underside of the instrument panel fascia between the speedometer and clock. There's already a rectangular opening in the sheet metal. Trim the vinyl covering over the hole and the rocker switch pops right in. Pull the clock for access to the hole and to run the wires.

That's a great idea! Simpler.
