Porsche Crest My First Full Engine Drop - How I spent New Years Eve - 78SC 3.0L

Happy New Year everyone !!! My new years eve was uneventful except for one stubborn CV bolt which yielded easily to a titanium drill bit.

I am just tidying up, I had a cam shaft o ring leak and discovered a broken nipple on the right tensioner so I am sending it out for replacement.

....thinking about different cams and P/C's. Anyone got any suggestions for Cams and P/Cs I already have the 46 PMOs and M&K 2/2 ?

Aloha,

Shane

Congratulations! Right of passage... I'm partial to my WebCams... P/C very pricey if not required.

How long did it take to drop the engine? I need a tranny rebuild but am nervous about dropping it myself.

Congrats Shane,
I was standing right where you are last week. At least you have a garage! You are ahead of me! Good luck with the repairs. Mack6820, if you are nervous about doing this for the first time (as I was) get a manual and read it, read it, read it, and then go at it. It is intimidating if you haven't done it before for sure. When you go to disconnect the accelerator pull rod there is a tiny little pin in the ball that you can barely see. Once I put my glasses on poof! there it was. Good luck.

Just under 4.5 hours, It's not that bad, I took the engine and trans out together, it seemed easier than trying to separate the tranny under the car.

This engine has been out before someone had spliced a quick disconnect on to the reverse switch and the grounding cable looked pretty fresh, but there was a lot of grime and debris on top of the trans.

I read through Wayne's 101 projects and used it as a reference.

Glad it went well... The first time I tried it... I actually dropped my engine about three feet. Crushed the tin and mangled the oil cooler. Sucked.

Nice work Shane!

I say 3.2 short stroke and a set of nasty cams

I spent New Years Eve in Kailua watching some good friends get plastered and fall down!

When I get ready to drop the engine from my Carrera don't be surprised if I give you a call.

I actually went to the shop today and took most of my front suspension off to clean the inner fenders for paint. Found out I need both ball joints and outer tie rods.

Question Just when everything was going good

I was just out in the garage trying to get the cam nuts off and I am pretty sure the left chain slipped a link.

I only locked down one side and thought I had put the other tensioner in.

Yep I am sure it slipped the engine only turned about 30 degrees after the slip, I haven't applied a lot of pressure.

Can I just back of the valve adjustments and back that cam back up a link? Or should I just disconnect the chains? I want to take of the chain housings.

If you are taking the chain housings off, a retime will be needed. If you don't have Wayne's rebuild book you may want to pick it up. Just remember how everything comes apart so you can reinstall bushings etc as they were. Pictures are a huge asset.

Lock the flywheel so you won't be turning the motor over while taking off the cam nuts.

Get Wayne's book, it is a great crash course/reference in 911 engines.

Cheers,

Great job and good way to spend New Year's...I've watched as my friend has dropped the engine in my car in a little over an hour (he has a lift and has obviously done this a number of times). Good to have friends that know what they're doing!

BTW, I like the Pelican sticker placement.

Aloha Shane...I did the same thing 2 yrs ago on the same day!

Give me a holler if you need some tools or Wayne's book...I also have some notes from Jerry Woods and Bruce Anderson that may help.
I can offer some assistance next week Sat. as I'm in the middle of doing my door frames now.
I wish I knew the hex bolts were going to be a different size from what is in my car now...oh well live and learn.

Let me know Bro!

Can I pressure wash the engine?

Before I get to carried away here, can anyone seee any issues with pressure washing a greasy engine?

I used something called purple power and a pressure washer on the transmission, it looks purty.

Next up.... Mr. Leaky;

I am not doing a tear-down , just replacing the cam shaft o rings and gaskets and re-timing the cams.

To be continued.....

Damn! I gotta do that to my spare mag-cased trans

Shane, I have one of the adapters for mounting your engine to a standard engine stand if you need it.

Shane, Happy New Year!

Looks like you are having some fun in the sunny State of Hawaii.

I am rebuilding a 1978 3.0L engine as well, so I will be interested in any thing you find here and how you solved it.

Good luck with that.

Are those SSIs (heat exchangers) I see peaking out the back of the engine?

Cool.

BTW...forgot to mention my suggestion:

964 profile/ground cams and late SC pistons and cylinders.

Idea is from a friend up North of me whom suggested I do the same to mine.

Way to go Shane! I am in the middle of doing my first engine drop too. I am almost at the point of actually bracing the engine/trans on the jack and loosening the mounts. Scary!

Good luck with your tensioner fix,
Michael
