G Body Wheel Size

Can anyone please tell me what the largest reasonable Diameter Wheel size I can mount to a 1983 SC? I have 16" now, can I go to 19"?

Kevin

Kevin:

I've heard about folks running 18" wheels, but 17" seems to be the sweet spot, as our suspensions were designed to work with a fair bit of tire flex. Key is making sure that the diameter of the tire you're using is comparable to (or maybe even a bit smaller than) the diameter of the stock tires -- otherwise, you're going to lose some power spinning the larger diameter tire

Check out the bottom of this thread for some good info 911SC Fuchs - Changing from 6&7 (911) to 7&8 (951)?

It is your car, and feel free to do whatever you want to your car. But 19s on a G body will look silly. There will be basically rubber band sidewalls. It will ride and perform poorly.

I have 17 inch Euromiester wheels 7 & 8 width. and 225/45 front and 255/40s rear. The fill the wheel wells and look great.

Again, your car, so do whatever you want, but I suspect you will hate how it handles with 19s and rubber band sidewalls.

Good luck.

The space for the tires is the limiting factor, you could use any size wheel as long as the tire fits the allotted space

a secondary but still very important consideration is the torque cost of the wheel & tire, here it's more the tire, torque cost comes from mass and distance of the mass from the axis of rotation

when choosing tires, the OD is the most significant datum to consider, w/ stock engines and gearing try to keep tire OD under 25"

I've run 17s on Both my SCs and Carrera, personally I don't think there is any benefit going 18 or larger.

When I got my car a few years ago, it had 964 bumpers and 18". I think that is going a bit to far... Here is a pic;

215/45/17 and 245/40/17, I believe per your recommendation, Bill!

That said, I’m going back to the alignment shop… for better or (likely) for worse, I need to get rid of the extra .5”-.75” of wheel gap that I now see.

My car at the time of purchase had 16" Fuchs. 7" and 8" with 205/55/16 on the front and 225/50/16 on the rear.

I went to 17" wheels with 7" on the front and 8" on the rear. Front offset is et 23 on the 7" and et 10 on the rear 8". Tires 205/50/17 front and 255/40/17 rear. NO ISSUES !!!!

Hi @AG81 - are you sitting at European ride height or US? I have an '84 that has been lowered to European ride height sitting on the original 16 in fuchs. I am looking at going to the exact tire and wheel size of your setup (Tires 205/50/17 front and 255/40/17 rear) but not sure if it will fit properly given the European ride height. Thanks!

The only years 91s had different US and RoW ride heights were MY 1975-1983
In '84 all markets had the same spec which was the same a was used from '69

I'm also curious as why you chose those tire sizes

I had 17" tires on my '79 SC when I bought it from the last owner. It looked fine, but the ride was fairly rough on my northern city roads. I also had some rubbing on the rear flares when I had extra weight in the car.

I changed to 16" and the ride comfort improvement was noticeable.
