Having trouble with syncro snap rings

I'm having real problems reinstalling the syncro's snap rings back onto my gears. Is there a trick to it I should know about? I have a nice set of snap ring pliers, but I can't do it

install the syncro, bands and dogs. push the syncro ring all the way down against the teeth with your left thumb and middle finger. get the notch in the teeth pointing to the right. while you hold it down, (it wants to spring back up), start one end of the snap-ring into it's groove, right at the edge of the notch. hold it in with your thumb, and expand the ring with snapring pliers and spirally install it, clockwise, the rest of the way around, pushing the ring into the groove as you go. the last bit of the end may hang, so bip it into place with a screwdriver handle.
take them off the same way. align the open end of the snap-ring with the open end of the teeth, expand so you pull the top end out of the groove and upward, then twist counter- clockwise as you expand the ring.

Thank you John for taking the time to type that out. Your method worked great. I spent all last night trying to put the entire ring on at once. They key was to get one edge into the groove, then work it around. Thanks again!
