Hello All, I have a 1982 911SC Targa Vin WPOEA0911CS161741 with an engine number of 64C3484 Would like to know if it was original to the car? Also saw 930/16. Thanks in advance!

Vin is correct for an 82 targa delivered to the US, and so is your engine number and engine type. Only way I know to tell if an engine is original to the car is to get a certificate of authenticity, but I think those are much pricier these days.

My understanding is that COA's do not confirm matching engine numbers for VINs any longer.

You would think someone would have put together and approximate database on motor numbers by year.

If it were mine I do not think it matters if it was # matching unless. it was a show queen.
If it is on the road and drivable I would be happy.
Still working on my 80sc targa to get it back on the road.
Good luck, John

I always like to know what I have, comes in handy down the road, especially when repair time comes.

Engine numbers are on this page: Simon's Porsche 911 SC Site

It confirms a 64C is a 1982. Only way to confirm it is matching these days is to order a Porsche Classic Technical Certificate. It costs $500 and you need to take the car in for a dealer to inspect.
https://www.porsche.com/usa/accessoriesandservices/classic/technicalcertificate/

Some dealers are willing to enter your VIN and show you the engine number in their database, but I'm not sure how far back that goes.

Mark

Wow, don't know how I missed That!! That's pretty good and close enough for me, I was pretty sure it was original. There have only been a few owners, still have original tool kit, Manuel ect. Thanks Mark! Curios what the rest of the numbers mean though

In the engine number? They are just sequential engine numbers. The Porsche Red Book has a lot more info than Simon's site. It also explains what the numbers in the VIN mean.

Good info and book Mark, Makes perfect sense for keeping track of engines. Just not easy to match them to cars unless Porsche share info..
