Best tire & size choice for 1977 911

I need to replace my Yokohama's on my '77 coupe. Looking for opinions on replacements. Please let me know your favorite brand and tire size.

Thanks.

I’d go ahead and put on a Nomex suit before other replies start rolling in.

You might want to post your wheel sizes?

'77 tires

My wheel size is 15"

I was running 205x60x15 Yokohama's. Then I found out one rubbed just a little on the passenger rear against a braided oil line.

I just bought four Vredestein Sportrac 5 195/65 R 15 from Tirerack at a very good price - the size is similar as the 185/70 that was the original fitment

I run 205/55/16 in the front, 225/55/16 in the back. I like the kuhmos ectsa PS31. I used the ectsa Supra before but they don’t make it anymore. Inexpensive and good tires. I really like the lower profile 55 tires on 16 inch wheels, but it may not work as well with 15 inch wheels.

I like my Continental ExtremeContact Sports. Use them for everyday, HPDE and rain tire for Autocross (in place of my Hoosiers).

Most '77s would have come w/ 4 x 6x15ET36 wheels and 185/70 x15 tires

If you are going for originality Pirelli CN36 in that size are the tire to use

later in the product cycle life 195/65 x15 were supplied in those wheels

all of the above tires are ~25+" tall

for a biy of a performance boost 205/55 or for more of a boost 205/50 can be used on the 6s, I'd avoid 20/60 as that is even taller than oe is is a drag on performance

There must be a custom oil cooler setup on that car for the 205s to rub, w/ 205 the backspace is around ~5.5" and most 911s even w/ stock oil lines can get away w/ ~6"

Have a look at the Yokohama Advan Fleva which looks like a replacement for the S-Drive which I am running on my 77 coupe. Loved my S-Drives.

I am using Continental ExtremeContact Sports 205/55-16 on my 1973 with 6x16 Fuchs. There were no rubbing issues after I upgraded to Turbo Torsion bars. Prior to that I had a rub about 1-2 inches above the fender.

When I use my 205/50-15 Hoosier SM's on my 6x15 Cookies, I had a rubbing issue where the tire shoulder would rub against one of the nuts on my right spring plate. This was resolved by installing a jam nut in place of the stock nut, cutting off the exposed threads and adding a 5 mm spacer.

Interesting

I've seen 215/60 on 7x15ET23.3 rub a couple of inches up into the paint in back, the back space in that combo is ~ 5.5" too. Same as 6ET36 w/ 205/55, Hoosiers do run wide in the 205 size by ~.4" over other brands

Generally contact on the inner side at the il line and a trailing arm bolts occurs at b/s ~6"

Here's a tire w/ 6" of back space

Glad to see this thread is recent. I need to replace my Michelin Pilot Sports A/S on 16x7 Fuchs. The 205/50 ZR16s that came when I bought it a few years ago rub the fender and I was thinking of dropping to 195 (and up to 55 maybe?) to alleviate that but the Michelins don't come in that size. Any thoughts?

rarelement,

I like my 205/50/16 Goodrich G Sport Comp 2 tires on my 77. Check out Tire Rack. They were very highly rated 5 years ago, when I got them, but newer ones from Falken, Firestone and General may have overtaken them in testing. My car is lowered and I have the rear arches rolled with 6mm wheel spacers. No rolling or spacers on the front.

205/50/16 BF Goodrich Comp Sports on 16x7 rears. Car is lowered and rolled fenders. No rubbing. 16x6 fronts w/ 5mm spacer and plenty of room to consider 16x7s

I'm going to jump into the fold as well, as I am in the market for new tires for my 77. I have been running 205/60/15 Yoko's forever and have loved these tires. 160 tread wear rating, nice and sticky. This size, in my mind is the best looking on the narrow body cars, but might rub unless the rear fender is rolled...mine are. I also run standard 7" Fuchs, not the 7R. I have been looking at the Pirelli CN36, but it only comes in 185/70 and 215/60 x 15. I do not think that I will be able to fit the 215's on the rear of my car, but feel that the 185/70 will look a bit skinny. ugh

your best bet would be to roll (or shave) the front fender lips to better accommodate the 16x7" front Fuchs and stick with 205/50-16 fronts and avoid rubbbing. Another option would be to revert back to 16x6" front wheels (which were stock for non-widebody 911s). When I switched from 16x6" to 16x7" front Fuchs, I was able to roll my front fender lips to successfully avoid front fender rub and have around 10k rub-free miles on my 16x7 front Fuchs/Michelin Pilot Sport as3 combo.

Pirelli

I ended up going with the "new" Pirelli CN 36 tires in 185/70 all around and couldn't be happier.

Panorama had a tire comparison test with a long hood, CN36 are an excellent choice for summer use, just better are the Avon CZ. I've had 3 sets of CN36, smooth till the end and confidence inspiring.
Turns put Walter Rohl was instrumental in picking the right compound for the CN36 to make it Porsche spec N.
