HELP MSD box, blaster coil and pertornix ignitor problem
As stated in the title i just installed all of the above but was not able to make the car run with the ignitor, wen back to regular points and the car started right away! although i did fail to install the .8 ohm resistor so after a few min of running the car shut off and also was not running quite well.
Anyone here has installed these 3 together, i read somewhere that MSD box and pertronix dont work well together, is this correct and i should stay with points, if not is it worth installing the ignitor? Also another question about ignitor i did seat properly the ring on the distributor, shaft, just not sure if there is a correct way as in is there a specific part that should align with the rotor , maybe a mark that i missed an maybe thats why i was getting spark at some other point rather than when the rotor was facing #1 or so on. Cables and everything else is correct because it did run with points afterwards, just not forever and ewas running rough oru coughing at high RPMS when trying to set timing. Is dwell adjustment needed or not anymore since im using MSD box? Thanks! |

regular MSD doesn't do anything for dwell, it just delivers the energy to the coil
if you have regular points, you have to adjust the gaps/dwell. I've had MSD and Pertronix, worked fine, not with blaster coil tho, had the correct Bosch coil, can't rember which one that was at the time. Check your pertronix install manual and troubleshoot it's function maybe you missed something or have the wrong one for your application. or you just have a bad one..

Hi, if you download the MSD pdf there is a diagram on page 19 showing it hooked up to Petronix Ignitor Kit.
Remember to gap the plugs for the MSD, as standard the gap on NGK plugs is too tight and needs opening up. |

When you changed to the ignitor, you most likely changed the timing, since the dwell you previously had is no longer in play.
As long as all ignition components and the overall hookup are in order, try rotating the distributor a little either way until the engine starts and runs. Then reset the timing. I had to do this with my car. I have increased the spark plug gap to .042". MSD and Pertronix work fine together as long as you have spiral core ignition wires. Solid core wires should not be used. Clewetts work fine on my car.

Thanks to all for your help, I will gap the plugs today and give one more try to the igniter now that I have the ohm resistor, also later today I have to pickup the rpm signal converter.

I'm running MSD box, Blaster coil, Petronix ignitor and Clewett wires on my 2.8 Tach works fine without adapter. No problems for years.
