Trigger angle setup
G`day gentleman, I`m setting up my Ecu master Black ECU and it needs (all of them do) a proper trigger setup. In the case of Emu Black it needs to know a number of teeth including missing ones (no surprise here), First Trigger Tooth (let`s call it FTT) and Trigger Angle (TA).
My trigger wheel is 60-2 located at the pulley. The sensor is VR looking at 11-th tooth when at TDC (shown at the pic) ![]() So, the whatever logic I have it tells me the FTT should be 11, which makes TA around 66 (6 degrees per tooth) but when I put this numbers the timing light shows no TDC. So to have a TDC at timing light I had to move my TA to 117 degrees. Those examples on Emu Black trying to explain it but since they have a sensor BEFORE TDC and in my case a sensor goes AFTER TDC I have no idea of what to put in. And should I mention she doesn`t start? The TA on Emu could be between 30 and 120 degrees only but there are other things like "ignition output offset" to sort out phasing (I assume)/ Please someone tell me what numbers I should put in and why? I`m stupid, apparently... |

Very possible that your tooth gap is not aligned with TDC. So you have to take into account the missing tooth offset.
Honestly, It doesn't matter what the offset is as long as your timing firing with a light matches the indicator on the crank pulley. Meaning. zero deg on ECU matches 0 deg on pulley. Don't make this too complicated. I admit I have never heard of Emu (other than a bird). Is this sequential with a cam phasing trigger signal? It is possible that you are 180 out and trying to fire #1 at #4. That is called wasted spark and will not run. Add 180 to the offset or rephase your cam signal.

Thank you Jamie, I`m trying to understand of how it works and why (call me a geek) along with making my car start.
I`ve managed to start her today with some help of other EMU users (good ECU btw) but for now - she`s in a wasted spark mode. I want her to be full sequential so I need to know how to make it work ![]() Anyway, if you interested - here is a video I`ve took today In short - 3.2SS with Triumph 675R ITB`s https://youtu.be/vK1ZwogCCZo |

For $1000 looks like a good value, can do a lot. Might have to check it out.

The reason why the the crank position sensor is around 66 degrees BEFORE TDC is that it makes it easier for the computer to register TDC with an early "heads up". Having the sensor before TDC gives the ECU early warning that TDC is rapidly approaching. It's important to have this around that degree of separation because with a lot of noise coming from electrical components and the ignition system, the ECU can easily lose sync.
To run a sequential ignition setup you will need both cam and crank inputs. As far as the crank position sensor, you want about a 1.5-2mm air gap between the crank trigger wheel and crank sensor. Last edited by FrontGarage911; 07-14-2021 at 03:18 PM.. |
