Exhaust comparison thread
I have a stock muffler and been mulling over getting a Scart muffler outlet based of hearing some clips. Anyone heard multiple of these brands in real life have a good summary to differentiate these options: dansk vs. scart vs. m&k vs stock exhausts?
What I’ve gathered through searching here so far: Scart = screaming at 5k that can be a whine to some people M&k = more booming drone that get annoying on highway but amazing on city Dansk = good an acceleration sounds Sock = quietest when compared to above. |

Sound is in the ear of the beholder. You're not going to get any two people who judge the same. Then there is the different types of mufflers such as Street or Sport versions, single out dual out, etc. There is also consideration to be made on what comes before the muffler. Tuned headers, heat exchangers, good and bad. Stick a dual inlet dual outlet Sport muffler on a Street car and yes it's likely to be loud and drone at specific RPMs, it's a Sport muffler. Same test with the Street version gets a completely different result. Sound clips are a good start but the only way to truly judge the sound you like is to go for a ride in a car with the setup you will have and see for yourself.

Comparing any audio source on the internet is a crapshoot unless you have a reference to know how loud it is.
Here's a Porsche RSR race car at speed. In person, my cell phone dB App displays about 100-110 dBs. At your desk, you can adjust the sound pressure level (SPL) from 0 to whatever your playback equipment can produce. Try it. The actual SPL is somewhere in between. Using your cell phone APP, crank the volume up until the meter displays 100 dBs. You'll need three hands; one hand to adjust the volume and two to cover your ears. Caution: 100 dBs is ear injury territory. What I'm trying to convey is that w/o knowing the dB reference level in a recording, you're just hearing the tone or timbre without the actual SPL. Imagine your car radio with the volume knob locked at level "8". How would you communicate how loud level 8 is on the internet? Sherwood |

The previous posters are right on. It’s nearly impossible to compare something so subjective based on audio clips on the internet. That being said, I took a video of my M&K 2-1 and it sounds to me very much the same in the video as real life.
I love it! By far the best bang for the buck upgrade I’ve done. No ragrets, couldn’t be happier. https://youtu.be/QsugpTciv5A

Everyone will have a different opinion here, of course. The stock exhaust (with cat delete) on my 82 SC was boring to me. I tried the M&K and it was a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, but the sound wasn't quite right. Then a couple years ago at Luft in LA, I heard the perfect exhaust. I talked to the owner and he said it was a 2 chamber Dynomax muffler that had been custom welded by a local shop.
So I came back home from Luft and ordered the same Dynomax muffler from Amazon for about $100. Took it to a local shop and had them custom weld the rest of the pipes for me. An hour and $50 later, I had a great sounding exhaust. The only thing I wish I could change is that I'd prefer to have dual center outlets. Maybe I'll find another similar Dynomax in the future that I can run dual center tips... I'd suggest trying to find others in the aircooled world in your area - the SF bay should have plenty of folks. Listen to what everyone else has and see what you like.

I think a distinction needs to be made between a complete exhaust vs just a new muffler. Equal length headers provided by something like SSI’s, pre ‘74 heat exchangers or those from RarlyL8 are completely different from bolting something up to the stock single collector Porsche offerings.

For one reference point, my 914-six with B&B headers and a modified factory 2in-2out, twin pipe muffler idles at around 80 dB (from the driver's seat). At 4000 rpm, it's 88 dB. OK w/me, but, MHO, bordering toward loud.

FWIW...
I love the sound of my Monty muffler with a M&K bypass. yeah, its loud...but not too loud. Nothing sounds like a Monty. The build is outstanding. They take several thousand miles to truly break in, but once they do nothing sounds sweeter... Monty Mufflers | Mufflers for Porsches
