Non ethanol and Sta-Bil

Do I need a fuel stabilizer if I am using non ethanol fuel?

If it makes you feel better, why not.

If you drive your car infrequently and it is 6-12 months between fill ups, yes.

I don't drive a couple of cars from Nov. - May, otherwise they are used as DD.

With 9 cars in the fleet and a few power tools i have been using Stabil for 20 plus years. Most of my toys get few miles and can sit for a month or more without firing up. Prior to my conviction to Stabil I would have starting problems from clogged carbs to injectors. Not once in 20 years since religiously using Stabil have I had a problem.

Just me but I think its good stuff.

I have been using StaBil since '13 so I have the same experience. Not knowing chemistry so I didn't know how to respond to the non-ethanol without StaBil statement.

I don't believe ethanol non eth makes any difference as to the fuel degrading.
As I understand it gas companies started removing the additive chemicals that kept fuel uncompromised for extended periods of time as a money saving move....the additives that kept it from turning into a glazed varnish over time.

I always add Stabil or Seafoam at the end of the driving season. It can't hurt.

Does it matter if you add it after it is filled up at home vs putting it into the tank at the gas, station and then drive home so that StaBil runs through all lines and injectors?

For me it does matter.

I add it during the last fill up prior to storage so that it gets throughout the fuel system.

No, non-ethanol will not cause you to need any additive so you an unchain the two. Stabil is used by pouring it into ideally a near-empty tank, filling it up with gas, taking it for a spirited drive, then parking. You want to run it through the entire fuel system and this ensures you do so, plus park the car hot if you intend to "put it up" for a time.

That is just the fuel system - there is a checklist to follow concerning battery maintenance and tire over-inflation, etc. Good threads in this BBS to review. Good luck!

The fuel sold today has very little of the preservatives that keep it fresh. I use Stabil year round for my yard equipment as a 5 gallon can of gas last a year. I also dose my 911 every late fall as the weather get to a point that the tank of gas will last many months.

Stabil is not that expensive, especially compared to fuel system problems on a 911.

The only gasoline sold that is long stability for over a year is aviation gas. It is way more expensive than a can of Stabil, and it has lead in it which is not good for the cat.

Not worried about a Cat as they didn't use it in the '73 Carrera RS or in my '76 which used the same engine.

I add mine about a month before I figure my last driving will be not necessarily at the time I put gas in. That way I figure it mixes in and cycles through the system. If I add gas before I park it, I keep track of how many gallons and add accordingly.

Will have to see how many gallons will it take. I figure if I over calculate it shouldn't do any harm.

I think 1 oz does 5 gallons so you should be able to put 4oz of Stabil in a nearly full tank and have it dosed well enough. If done late and you don't drive the car, I typically push on the bumper to get the fuel sloshing around to mix. Then back the car out of the shop and let it run for 10 minutes to get the mixture throughout the fuel system. The main thing you want to make sure of is that the mixture gets through the entire fuel system.

Aviation gas is just not a great choice for a car. Yea, it has high octane so detonation is not an issue, but it is designed to work in engines like our Cessna 182. It is a 540 cubic inch flat 6 that makes 240 HP and emergency redline is slower than an old Mercedes 240 diesel engine. It does have lots of preservatives as many sport aircraft sit for a few months at a time, and sometimes 6 months or more during an extensive annual.

If ou have MFI and don't drive much use the Stabil Marine, (blue). I use it a t every fill, keeps the pump nicely free. Old gasoline forms into sticky residue and varnish.

What's the difference between the blue vs the red?. I think the majority of people use the red in their automobiles.
Is there an advantage to using the blue in my '76 2.7 mfi?

From my understanding, the blue has more corrosion inhibitor to help protect the ferrous parts of the fuel system from attack by the moisture absorbed into E10.

I am a convert, thanks. Another question, since I use non-ethanol fuel I don't need to be concerned over moisture as the E10?
