2.8 surprise
.....Teardown time...... disassembling a 2.8.and I assumed that the P&Cs were Mahle Motorsport/Nickies combo.....but, I noticed that the cylinders are rusty........hmmmm.
These must be the AA Performance or QSC kit....I've never used them....it'll be interesting to see what's up in there. Does anybody have any experience with these P&C's?

No, the owner provided the build sheet and they are QSC parts.

No experience on the QSC p&Cs. I have 92mm Mahle pistons and cylinders when my engine was built in 1999. It would cost over double what I paid today.
All the best to you and your business. |

2.8 piston issue
Here's a pic of the piston from cylinder #3
Some deep scratches in the skirt.......other pistons and cylinders don't look bad, but the leak down test wasn't stellar, so....moving on to a new set of Mahle & Nickies

Exciting build, it'll be like mine (yes I still have yet to put mine together).
I should have done your EFI and build years ago when it was cheaper. Should be a rocket. I'm guessing the old rebuild was the AA setup (but that was a wrong guess), I was trying to find one of their setups, but and all they had was cast iron cyls...so I ended up with the nickies 2.8 kit through you too.

I didn't know fully threaded head studs were used in mag cases. Well, the coating is gone. Maybe these are aftermarkets? Porsche sells "fully threaded" studs but they aren't described as dilivar, for $63/ea. Are they std steel studs with a dilivar price? A magnet would tell.

These fully threaded studs are not steel...the magnet is not attracted.

Fully threaded non-magnetic, are they 993 Turbo dilaver studs then?

I just checked prices on Nickies. Whoa. That probably settles the question of getting new studs. For my own use, I'd be tempted to epoxy 'em and re-use.

Using the cast iron cylinders requires an experienced machinist to set proper piston clearance. It's challenging as the parts heat up as you're working with them, which changes the dimensions. Looks like they left one tight and that's the result. Bummer.

I used QSC cylinders with j&e pistons on a 3.2 ss turbo years ago. They were great and the cylinders were aluminum but that was the early stage of qsc.

Ben,
I've heard that the QSC P&Cs are hit or miss.......and in this case, definitely a miss. The Nickies/Mahle combo is pricy, but great stuff. regards, al

Looking good Al!
Just out of curiosity, not counting your labor, what do you estimate parts and machine work is going for these days to do a “normal” engine rebuild?
