Does anyone know what this is?

Hi all,

I'm in the middle of installing the front oil cooler upgrade for my 1980 911SC Targa. I have the battery out while doing some wiring and I spotted this curious orange block, for lack of a better word, attached to the positive battery terminal by a loose bracket. I have had no luck searching with google. It seems to be something the PO installed and I'm wondering what it is. I'm planning on cleaning up some of the wiring work in the future but for now I'm wondering if it even needs to be loosely attached to the battery cable at that bracket shown in the pictures. I ask because it's kind of a tight fit when the battery is installed and I don't want the bolt and metal bracket to scratch up the interior.

I'm attaching some pictures and thanks for the help!

Awesome, thanks for the help Richard! I didn't even know it had an alarm system. I wonder if it's still working. Anyway, it's definitely not something that I want. I will add it to the projects list and rip it out during the spring or summer. I will need to figure out everything that was changed and the stock wiring configuration. In your experience how difficult is it to remove?

Thanks again!

Not that big of a deal, just have to folllow the wiring and where it is spliced in to the factory harness remove it and reconnect the wires.

Likely for an alarm, or some 1,000 watt stereo system. Either way, best practice, remove all that crap, and go back to stock wiring.

The factory wiring is far from great. Read up on some needed upgrades. Be sure to have relays for the headlights to avoid frying the turn signal switch. Put in a fuse to the front AC blower, and a fuse to the instrument lighting.
