				mocal experience?

have any of you guys installed the mocal 19 row cooler? if so was there a noticable benefit cooling over the trombone cooler (im sure there is but significant)? how was the install kit? were the brackets and mounting hardware efficent and well built? and lastly did the horn require remounting as in the case of the carerra cooler? thanx in advance for any insite

				Mocal is worth it!

I installed a 19 row mocal cooler last summer in Albq with my 2.7 that already had the trombone. MAJOR IMPROVEMENT. The trombone was ok for light highway speeds and short trips in light traffic...any other situations would lead to temps in the high 230's to 250...never past that mark though even at the autox. With the mocal installed and the 2.7 the temps dropped dramatically... for light highway speeds and short trips in light traffic the temps would stay around 180-190 and the hard driving situations would see 210-220...so this is a great upgrade! With my 3.6 installed...the mocal is currently my only cooler as well. So far I have not seen high temps that make me want to add a second cooler...but that may be the issue. I went to Bitburg last weekend and at highway speeds of 100+ mph for a little over 1 hour the temp never breached the 220 mark...and during the autox I spent quite a bit of time watching the guage and it never topped 190, this was due to short runs with lengthy breaks between runs. As for mounting...the only part I had to change was the configuration of the horns, simply wanted them out of the way for cooling efficiency purposes. The mounting bracket simple attaches to the inner fenderwell and the back of the headlight bucket...very simple install indeed. Good Luck.

Just to add to k9's comments - I really think you need to add a fan to the cooler when you install it. The Mocal is a radiator style cooler and relies on airflow *through* the cooler to work. Adding a fan ensures that the air flows through and not around the cooler. I added this kit (Mocal) to my car a couple of years ago with a fan controlled by a switch in the driver's compartment. With the fan off, the car runs hotter than it did with the trombone. With the fan on, temps drop right to 80C. I added mine mostly to cool the car better on the track and the Mocal/fan combo kept it around 100C-115C (on a 2.7). Mike

I have the 19 row Mocal with the 7" Spal fan, manually controlled. This is the size bigger fan than recommended but has 100cfm more for the same money, I recommend the larger fan.

No fan used...I did have a friend make me a simple "Scoop" that replaces the front right reflector and it directs the air into the cooler. I have also considered making a slot in my front valance to assist with airflow. I also modified my horn bracket so the horns stay up in the wheelwell away from the cooler...I am considering switching to the new style horns since they are so much smaller.

I have a Mocal cooler installed by the previous owner of my 83SC,it has a manually operated Spal fan on it and in 95 degree heat with the AC on high she stays around 210 on the highway, may creep to about 220 or so in stop and go traffic. It is a great upgrade.

You can get either a push or a pull, I went with the push, that is what the factory uses !

I just installed the 19 row MOCAL on my car less then 2 months ago. Do a search using the keyword "mocal" and my screen name and you'll find 2 threads out there. Overall I give it a thumbs up now but won't know for sure about the true cooling impact until we hit the dog days of summer.
