Starter Motor Numbers
I'm going to replace the original starter on my '84 3.2L before it gives up the ghost and leaves me stranded somewhere. The catalog lists two part numbers for the starter: "911 604 101 AX" and "911 604 101 01". What's the difference between the two? Also, any words of wisdom on starter replacement would be appreciated. Thanks!

I took the advice of several here and went with a hi torque starter, purchased here at Pelican. I had previously bought a rebuilt Bosch model that was to replace my original Bosch. I ran into the same problem that many others ran into. Constant issues with the rebuilt starter, then a pressed in "ring" near the gear came loose and made it a total crap shoot as to when/if it would start. Went with the hi torque and the only issue I've had is the cable is not quite long enough to reach the new starter. I solved that with a short batter cable extension from O'reilly's.

If you insist on staying with the heavy Bosch unit, take the old one to a rebuild shop. First call them and see if they have a source for quality (Not Chinese!) bearings. If they do, and can guarantee using quality bearings, have the old unit rebuilt.
I went through all of that, and my Bosch starter would still heat soak, and not spin. After 30 to 40 minutes it would cool off enough to spin and all was good. I finally threw in the towel and replaced it with the high torque smaller lighter unit, and never regretted it. It does have a different sound, so you will have to get used to that, but there is no downside to the high torque starter. It works after a 12 hour drive in 100 degree heat. The Bosch starter would just lock up and leave me to push start it, or wait for it to cool down.

I went with the high torque /newer started when my OEM unit bit the dust this year - it's a much easier install [as its significantly smaller] - no regrets
