Targa top not “flat”

Hi all,

My targa top’s center panel sits a little high. This causes it to catch the wind a bit more. I was wondering if there is any way to adjust this, or otherwise fix it.

Bern... remove the top and flip it over resting it on a flat surface. There are small hooks on the top that are designed to grip the cross members. Those hooks are adjustable. Once they get slightly loose, they can move out of optimal position and no longer grip the cross member... and the roof will look as yours does. The hook plates have screws in them and there's a backing plate behind the roof panel. Do not unscrew the hook plate screws too much or those backing plates will be very difficult to retreive and put back in position. Adjust the position of all the hooks and tighten their screws.

Here's a top rebuild. Backing plates are seen in post #87.

Thank you! I’ll give that a shot. Much easier than I had assumed. I also need to replace the (sagging) headliner.

If the underside of your roof is in stock form, there's a coating of foam that if dried out... it's in crumbles. This can be a wonderful mess if not prepared for it. In other words, consider this when & where removing the headliner. BTW, the more you get into the roof, the more you may find to do---a black hole of sorts!

LOL, it’s the winter in the PNW, so I’ve got some time for black holes . I really appreciate the responses.

I had the same problem with my 84......It looked just like yours..wind would lift it up more.
Bought 4 of these and it fixed the problem. The ones on the ends were doing the job.

Well looks like my project is getting a bit more involved. Going to replace the vinyl as well.

Did mine a few years ago. Really not hard, just need to take your time to get it right.

With the weather we are having in the PNW I very much recommend you do this job in a nice warm area. Why? You want first off the best German grade top and second this piece nice and warm as you put the vinyl into place. Then, when you have stretched and assembled the top, the vinyl is as tight as it possibly can be. If you do this cold, the Summer will expose a flabby top. Trust me on this and good luck!

I will add that if this is the first time the top is being redone, there is a high likelihood, the burlap is shot as well and the other lining materials. Unless you want to do the heroic repairs yourself, Dan Petchel does a most excellent job of renewing these things. Per Dan if rebuilding a 911 motor is a 10, top rebuilding is an 11.

Check out his site: https://www.carsincnj.com/targa-tops.html

I have PDF's of the Service School Manuals and the Service Training Center documents if you'd like. PM me.

I have had multiple Targa's and it does take time.

Best.

Wow, thanks for that link. I hadn’t seen that one before.

There really seem to be two camps regarding top recovering. Send it out vs DIY. My plan is to do this myself (in the winter) but I have a heat gun and a fireplace . If I fail, well I’ll be out a couple hundred, but what else am I going to do while is rains and snows.

I’m not going for concourse, just a hobby to learn on and drive.

Looks like webbing is intact, so that should keep things simpler. Though one of the posts (front) is stuck and I’m pretty sure if I force it I’ll have to replace the nut plate (which would require replacing the webbing, ugh). Current plan is to just not mess with it.

Now just waiting for vinyl and foam…

Glue

I have used this product on my Targa top with excellent results.
When replacing a hood liner on a MB300 the parts manager said this is the product they use.
Get everything hospital room clean and work in a well ventilated area.
This product is available, the label has been changed.
