"There are a ton of great threads and links in the archieves, heres a good place to start"
I have spent a week reading and copying the archives and still didn't get the info I think is need to make a good decision. Which is why I started this thread. This comment is spot on, "Each will need similar work, w/ fewer additional parts necessary for the bigger blocks and better potential results." So far I have gleamed a few jems from this conversation. This last being one of the best. Thank you all for your comments. |

I'm surprised Wayne hasn't re-chimed in with this, but arguably (and I mean arguably - I'm not convinced), your $15k with a rebuilt 3.0 (to whatever specs) means you have a rebuilt engine. A second-hand 964 or 993 engine is just that. Theoretically, the rebuilt 3.0 would last longer (depends on state of tune, I guess).
I spent more than I would have on a 3.6 swap. I have a similar level of total power, with less low down torque. However, it sounds freakin' cool (and doesn't half look bad either - more or less looks like an MFI car). Your problem to me is that you haven't made a couple of key decisions yet. Wait, I just reread your first post - you don't care about emissions! I thought emissions were an issue. I'll try responding to Bill's estimates (he probably has more accurate prices than me): 98mm p/c ~$2500 - agree, I paid $2600 cams ~$1000 - agree? Sell your desireable web cam grind for some $$$ valve train ~$500? - part of ordinary rebuild Headwork ~$500? - part of ordinary rebuild?? hardware ~$600 - part of ordinary rebuild gaskets/bearing ~$500 - part of ordinary rebuild L/s crankshaft ~$4000 - less sell your 3.0 crankshaft for ??? enginemanagement ~$3000? - don't underestimate this cost labor ~$3000? - I dunno? In New Zealand, US$1200 (haha) If you went EFI, you still need a buttload of other stuff, including tuning, which $3000 might not cover if you are paying someone. I agree that carbs are not ideal for a street car. Of course, if you went 3.6, you would sell the 3.0! Check out Chris Streits engine too.
