What’s this?

I’m replacing the flywheel seal and rear pulley seal on my 71 911 2.2. I came across this below the rear pulley (circled in yellow). Is it common to replace the gasket at this time?

Intermediate shaft cover. If it's not leaking, my choice would be to leave it alone.

I think it may be leaking. It it a simple job to change the gasket?

Remove those 3 nuts. Gasket is a couple of dollars. Clean the mating surface area of the case and cover plate well---without gouging or scratching those surfaces. The plate's mating surface can be put on a glass window to ensure it's nicely flat. Good idea to get 3 new nylock nuts. Not sure if the washers there are bowed. If they are, I'd do new on those---cup of bow faces towards the case. Check both sides of the gasket before installing. Shouldn't be any deformities on either side and should be clean---no hairs, etc. Torque those nuts to spec working around each nut a little at a time---to compress the gasket progressively. Is a subtle step but as I see it, is worth treating gaskets with some finesse. With parts in hand, is maybe half hour project.
