which engine stand for 915 gearbox
I am going to rebuild my 915. I don't want to spend crazy money on the typical porsche 'spider' engine stand if I can get it to work on a normal engine stand that I already have in my shop. I assume this works? Or not? Are there any special measures to take?
Thanks Alexander |

In the 40+ years of repairing these transmissions, I never used a stand. So easy to do it on the bench.

Alexander, like John I've done repairs of 915s on the bench. They are light enough that rassling them on a bench is easy. Later transmissions are heavier and benefit much more from being fixed to a stand. For the G96, for example, having the transmission on a stand makes lining up everything to get the gear housing on a much less frustrating experience.
At the same time, I do find using the P201 adapter plus 313 clamp makes r&p set-up easier for the 915. Unfortunately the P201 is at present very difficult to find. You could try to use a generic engine adapter with sliding arms that allow it to mate to a bell with any old bolt pattern.

+1 for bench. I build them vertically.
Drill a hole in the bench for the mainshaft and a few more for long bolts for the bell housing to hold it while torquing things.

Sorry man, I don't drill holes on my work bench. Bad idea for me. But I get it.
For 915, I put it on my 911 engine yoke and put it on the stand. I am wimpy and don't want to muscle even a 915 gearbox around. I use a 4 post lift, lift it on the stand and roll it around. My back thanks me.

I like the reg Porsche engine stand. I can sit and spin it as needed. But that’s for assembling and re assembling. Bench for the rest.
