Oil Cooler Fan bypass switch install help
I have done a search and all the posts on this topic seem to be a little too technical for me. What is terminal 85? Where is it?
Anyone have detailed instructions on how to do this? Preferable with pictures... thanks alf

Is this a relay you're reffering to?
If it is - if you're looking at the spaded side, it'll be numbered. If the top spades horizontal and the bottom spade is vertical, terminal 85 is on the right.

![]() anthing that looks like a little black box from the bottom. A quick (way oversimplified )synopsis: A relay is what you use when you are trying to supply a controllable / switchable power lead to an item. They typically handle lots of current that would normally burn out toggle switches. It's controlled by your dashboard switch or thermostat control. So, it's like a way for a low current handling switch to control a high current demand item. To cut to the chase - Terminal 30 should hook to whatever you're trying to power - this is the high current side. Terminal 87 should be hooked to your power source - battery with a fuse in this case. 87A in this application should not be used. Terminal 87 should hook to either your dash switch (which should be grounded to metal) or some sort of thermostat sensor. Terminal 86 should be tied into the same thing as terminal 87. What happens, is when you flip the dash switch it allows terminal 85 to see ground. Since terminal 86 already has power, It will cause terminal 85 to hook directly to terminal 30 and provide power causing your fan to turn on. Turning off the dash switch will cause 85 not to see ground and therefore the power between 87 and 30 is disconnected, turning off your fan. You can substitute thermostat for the fan, etc. etc. I've never done a carrera cooler before but if you post the instructions I'll tell you how to spade it. rjp

Cool, thanks Randy.
I figured it out. There is a series of 6 red relays in the fuse box. The 5th one from the front of the car controls the oil cooler fan. The prongs are numbered. All i had to do was to run a wire from prong 85 on the relay to one of the prongs on the toggle switch and a ground wire to the other prong of the switch. Flip the switch, the fan turns on. Seems so simple once you get it figured out ![]()
