Engine temperature too high?
My stock 1974 2.7L runs about 180-200 during regular driving. Pushing it a bit It goes to 220 and stays there. Should I be looking at getting an oil cooler or are these temperatures ok?
I just did a complete rebuild about 2000 miles ago and the only thing that was done out of the ordinary was flycut the heads to boost compression a bit. My engine hasen't got any oil cooler other than the one inside the engine .

200 to 220 is the operating range for the 911 engine. If it does not go above 220, you need not worry. 240 to 250 is too hot - at these temps, dimensions can change enough to cause problems, and regular oils start to break down, losing lubrication properties, causing more heat, etc...

my car got to 280 once at Sebring in the summer. It happened real fast. had one oil coller then. added another and increased ventalation. no damage was done. i think i owe that to mobile 1. it n ow doesn't get above 190. i promised the car i would never run it that hot again.

Reese,
Nice looking racecar.... Glad it survived the high fever & associated trauma.. ![]() BTW, it' s always good to remember that the oil temp reading is only at ONE spot in the engine, and not necessarily the highest temp area (think bottom of piston, inside of rod bearing, etc... ![]() ![]() PS: I just returned from Wal-Mart, where they have Mobil 1 in the 5 QT bottles for $18.88 each. Looked like a huge stocking here... ![]()

Speaking of how hot it runs, I have an 83 SC and it doesnt have the temperature in degrees, just the bars. Where is the normal range for it to run?
