I can do you one up Lothar, I was six when my car was manufactured.

Anyway who cares what a survey answerin' fools say (how many people here reflexively hang up on surveys?).

I make up for all of them here's my top 10 most desired automobiles in no particular order:

1 1973 Carrera RS
2 993 Turbo
3 Alfa Romeo GTV
4 Landcruiser FJ40
5 Boxster S
6 72 or 73 911 S
7 My current car stripped down, with a rollcage, SSI's a 964 cam, higher compression pistons, no AC, no smog pump, lowered, R compound tires, MSI, much better oil cooling, a Gulf paintjob, etc.
8 A really sweet 89 Carrera
9 A 993 Carrera 4 Targa
10 Ferrari 250 Testarossa, or maybe a birdcage maserati, or a 356 Carrera 2, a 550 Spyder.....

I think I ran over ten...

Hey I'm doing pretty well my first car was a Landcruiser, and I have my 911!

I drive rice (acura), but still lust for a porsche in my heart (to paraphase Jimmy Carter)

I'm 36, and hate MSN, so I don't fit into the above mentioned demographic. I also dislike "most researched" lists, as they tend to contain cars that my mom would "research" and buy.

My list:

1978-1983 or 1987-89 Carrera (coupe or cab)
or
1972-1973 rgruppe type 911
or
1998 993 C2S (TT would be nice too)

Maybe it's an aircooled thing (I own a vw bus).

Here's edmunds.com comsumers "most wanted" (yes the 911 made that list):

It's great to hear from all the young guys: 1fastredsc, Joel, banjomike and greenmonster. Your thoughts and lists are pretty close to mine and I'm pushing 50! You are the guys who will end up with our cars and will keep the R Gruppe alive in the future! Stay focused on your dreams.

I'm not worried about Porsche's place on the desirability scale. My son (he's 16) has a '66 912. It's black on black w/Fuchs. When we bought it he paid half and I paid the other half plus registration, inspection etc. He worked summers lifegaurding and teaching swim lessons until he had the money. It was his choice! (OK I had some influence and dropped a few subtle hints). His car gets the most attention at his high school without exception. He's been asked several times how much he paid for it and when he says 45, his classmates will say "45 thousand!?!" They have no idea. Camaros/Camrys/5 liter Mustangs/Preludes etc. it's no contest. His nearly 40 yr old Porsche is still the coolest sled in the lot.

Man, I'd pay 4500 for a 912 *any* day. Sweet.

This 912 was in nice condition too. To give you an idea, i drove from Houston to Miami - 2200 miles round trip - to pick up the car. I had to trailer it home, but it was easy to get it running and on the road. The point is, when you see a Porsche, be it 5 yrs or 40 yrs old, it stands out amongst all the rest of the automobilia. No amount of neon lights, bizarre wings, huge mufflers, or wide wheels can make you want to rubberneck like the sight of a Porsche.

Wow...not bad...a Porsche 912 for a first car? My first car was a '79 Honda Civic "CVCC" or something. 1300 cc. I'm 33 now and after burning rice for 15 years, I've got my first 911, which was built when I was 4 years old. The feeling is unreal. If I'd have known that when I was 21 and bought an Integra for $6000, that I could have bought a running 911 for the same price, it would have been a no-brainer. Hindsight is 20/20.

NOW, I am looking into buying another one, a second one, from my boss since someone told him his engine was in need of a rebuild. It's a gold '76 Targa widebody and I'll probably get it cheaper than my '74 initial cost. Hell, I tried to sell the wife's new Maxima last year to put her in a Boxster, but she said it was way too small. (She has a LOT of crap in the trunk).

Hehe...I'm taking her to the Porsche dealer next week to test drive a Cayenne

Most of the youngins out here have no clue. But that's not a bad thing at all, making 911 an exclusive sport cars just for the elite. I'm 27 years old and most of my friends have no idea what a 911 can do, but then some have caught the porsche fever from me already after a ride or two. There's so many distractions out there when one goes shopping for a sports car nowadays, one has to be very firm on a decision when buying a 911 today or they will be lure into something else easily.

Like Jack Olsen said...
In fact I think this sentiment has been touched on more than once- why does'nt Porsche build a retro style 911?
After all it worked for VW, Mini and Jaguar and i am sure the new retro mustang will be a hit!.
The cars need to be more muscular even if costs a few .0001 in drag in a wind tunnel.
It would look twice as fast in the showroom and at the stop light!.
The shape of these bug eye cars gives the character!.
I was behind a nice red GT3 today but am sure my old car got more recognition as a cool sports car!.
Jacks car is probabley a dream car for most of us.
Some purists love the narrow body cars but the RSR or Turbo flares do something for me!!!

I really do not care what Porsche do from now on in, as it has no relevance to what I drive now or will drive in 5/10 years time.
The newest Porsche I would ever own would be a late model 993.

Porsche are sliding towards a nondescript marque where in afew years time a new Porsche will pull alongside and you will have no idea if it is a Porsche, RX9 or a new Toyota Supra!.

Long live the BUG EYE!!!!

Ben

Why are some of the old Porsches so attractive? I might be wrong, but didn't Dr. Porsche say the 911 was styled to resemble a woman's body? My 912E just didn't have the rear end, but the SC has flares that are just plain sexy.

As far as guys giving the 996 more respect, I would never slam another Porsche owner. However, the 996 and Boxsters are everywhere, even in podunk Memphis, TN. From the front view, I can't even distinguish a Boxster from a 911. Contrast this with a 993 of a few years previous, and wow, that is one sexy ride. If I had a bunch of money to throw away and had to spend it on a new car, it'd be the GT3. Slim it down a few hundred pounds, and there is a modern-day 2.7RS, jmho.

Kids my age with any kind of money drive flashy cars with 22" rims or jazz like that. It doesn't mean I would be rude to them. Everyone has their style, and it's not my place to say what is right or wrong. However, my 25 year old 911 has been and still is the ace of spades, man.

Jurgen
