Reliability of a 911 RS engine???
Finally, my 911 2.7 RS is done.
The engine is so wild, that I am a little concerned about it. It revs in no time to 6000 rpm. I installed a 6800 RPM rev. limiter rotor so I would not overrev. the engine. The engine has been disassembled, checked, new bearings, rings, guides, seats, valves, chains etc. and should be ok. I also tuned the MFI and changed the linkage going to the MFI so that under full throttle it would inject a little more fuel. Anybody out there with the same type of engine? And driven hard for quite some miles? Pictures are at www.dreamsonwheels.com thanks, harold |

Is it built to exact stock 2.7 RS specs? Meaning case, correct P/Cs, heads, cams, MFI space cam, etc.,etc.? Maybe a few more details are in order, but a stock 2.7 RS motor, (or early "S" motor for that matter), has a redline of 7200 RPM and can spend all day there once it's warmed-up. Does that answer your question?

Rs engine
Yes, it is all stock RS parts. A 2.4 S engine came in the new car in 1972 and had been converted at that time with factory parts to RS. Since I had the engine apart, I could verify all the correct parts incl. MFI.
The compression is about 110 - 120 an all cylinders and after the new rings are seated might go higher. I have a bursch muffler on it and it sounds great and loud. The power comes after 4000.- rpm, you really feel it. Maybe I can post a sound clip here for you to enjoy. thanks, harold |

About 50,000 miles on my 2.7RS MFI, driven hard, no problems. Rev limit can be raised to the normal 7300 rpm when broken in (500 miles). Make sure you have a good oil cooler up front.

Wow, thanks for the comments. Bursch muffler sounds just to good - must keep.
And for Randy: did you keep your thermo time switch for the start up fuelvalve? have mine on a button right now. Thanks, Harold

Harold, Have you heard an mfi car on a factory sport muffler? Nothing is better than that, although I may be biased, but oh well.
Happy driving!! ![]()

Harold - no, my 2.7RS MFI has the stock start up since I live in the PNW - the mornings are a bit cool up here except for about 4 months out of the year. The Bursch sounds cool, but I agree with Denis' posts regarding performance.

You might want to try a place called "Pelican Parts", think it's in CA.

I'm not really sure I understand the $49k value for this car? Too much "not stock" about it to be worth that much. Half that price would be pushing it, but that's just my opinion. It looks like a pretty neat car though. Enjoy the ride. RS motors do just that....they really motor. You should get 100k miles on it, unless you're tracking it all the time.

Here's my two cents worth.
I built my RS spec engine from a 73S engine core in 1984. It just turned over 150K a few weeks ago at the R Gruppe Rally de Monterey. Anyone that knows me will tell you I don't baby my car in anyway. I have been running Mobil 1 in it for the last several years and it still runs GREAT! It does have two small oil leaks, what do you expect for almost twenty years old. I have a Turbo brass tube cooler and it rarely gets over 185o and it sees 7200 rpm alot. I also run SSI exhaust with a stock muffler, MFI runs best with stock or factory style sport muffler. Hope this helps. Drive it FAST and Often as PORSCHE intended! All the best! Roger Grago R Gruppe #27 73 RS-T 70 2.4MFI VW Bus |

You'll have NO problems as long as it was built right! Mine only has less than 50K on it but gets used hard – redlined frequently plus regular 100+mph cruising (135mph in Europe....). OK, so our temperatures are lower (a lot!) but I can see no reason why a 2.7RS motor should be any less reliable than any other if looked after. As for the exhaust deal, throw away that Bursch. All sound and no power. Factory stock or factory sport – they're the only way to go. But then everybody else has alreaady told you that! Have fun.

Nice looking car, but $49k? You may as well ask $149k.

Harold,
Looks like a very nice car, but if that car gets 49k, then I will be asking 75k for mine. My original 73"S" has gotten numerous offers over 40k, but it is original down to the paint and is not and has not been registered for more than half of it's existance, including the last year. It appears as though too many parts are not original and I can't imagine the history on this will make much of a difference, unless it was Steve McQueens old car, which it is not. I would say 20k +- is fair since there are enough 2.7RS engines out there that can easily be put in an early car, whilie keeping the original engine. It has the wrong seats, trim, steering wheel... the list goes on and on. I would drive it and enjoy it, but not at that price! Thanks... Marc |

Thanks for the advice on the muffler. If I buy a sport muffler, then I have to do some work on the rear body.
Also thanks on the reliability of the engine, now I will have even more fun. About the original issues: Looks like that many of you would rather drive an old original dog than a beautiful restored car with some upgrades and enhancements. And about the value of an antique porsche - I might just start an other topic - but many of you would not like what I have to say - and you guys would take me apart. Thanks, Harold
