Sway Bar Question After Install...

I installed my RUF sways this weekend, much to the dismay of my car. Wrestling 23mm sways is no fun. All went well although it looks like one side has more of the sway poking out of the control arm tab than the other side. Everything fits fine, the bushings look good and aligned etc, but one side has maybe a half inch more poking through than the other. Anyone have this happen before? Obviously the answer is to undo it and make them even but what is the harm?

Jeff,

You really should re-do the installation, since unequal lengths will give you difrferences in the left-to-right and right-to-left stiffness.

What you will have is a difference in the MOMENT caused by the different lengths. Moment is defined as M=F*d, where Moment is a multiple of Force times the Distance. If the distance in greater, then you have greater Moment. Therefore, with the difference in length between the pivot points (your clamps(?) on the body and the point where the end of the bar is clamped, you will have different resisting Moments.

If you don't plan on using the car on the track, and if you don't have a verey sensitive seat-of-the-pants, then you may not notice the difference. But theoretically, there will be a real difference.

Does this help?

Pardon my ignorance, but is this bar an "under the body" bar in the front? If so, then one thing that helps when wrestling these things into place (I have a 22mm bar on mine) is to place a jack under the control arm and raise the front suspension u[ so that it is closer to approximating normal ride height. The sway bar will go into the bushing alot easier this way.

Andras,

So it is rocket science eh? Wow that is a good explanation. I was thinking the same thing except my little brain ended up with the thought, yeah it's messed up need to fix.

Ok, so I will go back and adjust...kinda tough to get exact. At what point in your space shuttle calculations do you think close is close enough...I guess I should measure.

but if the distance between the body mounts and then end mounts on the control arms are the same then will some excess bar sticking out of one side affect your calculation?? Since the part sticking out the end isn't twisting... Of course, I also think you should fix it. My thinking is that if the bar is not straight then you may get difference twisting forces due to a different location of the bend. Either way I think you should fix it.

Can you not just loosen things and use a BFG to "adjust" it a tad?

I like the BFH idea but alas I doubt that would work. Things are really tight in there...lots of silicone needed.

I cut the bushings down a bit to make them work but they see pretty uniform. But still very tight.

The ride with the sways is excellent...very go kart like with minimal increase in stiffness.

I am worried about my rear stock mounts as I hear once you upgrade they always tear away...car should have come with these from the factory.
