Recomendations on reference books
Could I get some recommendations on good Air cooled reference and technical books?
I'm aware of the MFI book and the engine rebuild book promoted here. What others are there that you folks would recommend? Titles would be helpful so I could google them. Thanks.

My go to books for almost everything is the parts manual mentioned above, a set of factory work shop manuals which sets come up for sale on the forum, and the Porsche Technical Specifications Book, it's a small book that is year and model specific to your car. Other than that I reference this forum a lot.

I would get Waynes "How To Rebuild and Modify Porsche 911 Engines"
You can find it here on Pelican. I looked up the cam timing for my 76S in the book. I was going to go off memory from 20 years ago and I would have been off a little so I'm glad I got the book. |

The Bentley is pretty darn good but the factory workshop manuals are probably the most comprehensive although spendy.

I really like the Bentley manual. I got it for the 3.2 I once had but still find it useful for my -70. This and the Porsche workshop manuals / spare parts catalogue

If what I'm trying to do is in Wayne's book, that is by far the best reference. I also have the Bently book open on that topic too. The Haynes book has good wiring diagrams and the more I can read up on a topic the better. Youtubes on the particular subject are excellent.

There are a few CIS references that are recommended as well - are you after any particular 911 generation? MFI, CIS, SC, Carrera?

That is a pretty broad request.
Are you looking for air cooled ENGINE specific references, or are you looking for references for the cars and associated engines? if the entire car, any specific year? Model (356,911, 912, 914...)? I may have some info I can send you via email, but don't know if it is relevant. |

Should have been more specific. 911's. Both 65-73 and later models. I recently purchased a 78 SC project and am trying to decide what to do with it. My first 911. Would like to backdate it possibly. But to what specifically I haven't decided. So I am seeking info on both early (65-73) and later models. Been reading a lot here and realized there is a whole lot about these cars that I'm not familiar with. Specifically the various differences and details with the older ones versus the impact bumper and later models.
Just trying to get as much info as I can. Thanks. |

My opinion - The Haynes manual, although quite abbreviated, does do a reasonable job of highlighting the important differences across the various model years in a condensed fashion. It's a cheap reference that is worth a read for general understanding - use the other books to get deeper into any given subject.
