New Owner- New Problems

Team,

Having recently purchased my 1984 Cabriolet, I took it in to get my Porsche guy to give it a once over. WELL....

The pedal box looks like it was on the bottom of the ocean. I was having trouble with the brake pedal locking up. Turns out the whole assembly is rusted beyond repair. A replacement is being sourced. Also come to find broken head stud on number 5. SO... Engine is coming out. Just my luck....

As my guy was working on the car, I started tearing the floor board out of the passenger side to look for any further water intrusion/rust. I forgot to ask him as I was just sickened by the news. The passenger side front firewall area has a rectangular opening that should have something there. It is just an open hole right now. I was watching a restoration video and saw something that had an electrical connector going into it. My car has zero in that hole. My car does have AC and I am wondering if there is something for the AC missing. ( I have not tried using the AC).

Does anyone know what is missing in this rectangular opening?

You are missing the A/C blower resistor pack. But maybe your A/C has been upgraded with Griffiths' PWM control in which this resistor pack is deleted? How do you control A/C blower speed? With the 4-position rotating switch or with a pot?

Does your A/C work by the way?

If your pedal box is real rusty, check the floor, front and back. If the car got rained on often with the roof off, it might have some rusty floors.

If there is no hole bellow the pedal cluster it could have been a rodent. Perfect place for a nest and place to pee. There are some great resources that rebuild them for your core and some money.

Regarding the broken stud, it happens and might not be as bad as you think. I recently uncovered one on my 3.0. The car still runs great. I'll drop it over the winter.

Assuming you are talking about a hole that is about 4" wide on the top, 2" wide on the bottom, about 3" tall.

Its a trapezoid opening through the 'bulkhead' created at the factory for the passenger side air intake to the evaporator box located in the 'smuggler's well' in the front trunk.

A black plastic trapezoid shaped piece of molded plastic is inserted in the hole in the bulkhead located under the passenger's side foot board. On the other side of the hole is the smuggler's box well. The black plastic piece then enters the side of the lower evaporator box housing. Its all a tight fit. A fan motor in top of the evaporator box sucks air in through the passenger side (trapezoidal) opening and as well through pipe in the bottom of the smuggler's well that leads to an opening under the driver's side pedals.

I was wondering what the OP was looking at, but suspected it was AC related. My 1979 had dealer-installed AC, and they just cut a big hole in the side of the smugglers box.
