Problems after installing Wevo G-50 Shifter Classic

Hi everyone,

I had the Wevo G-50 Shifter Classic shifter installed in my 87 911, and I've a few problems:

1. The classic shifter is uninstalled under the shifter boot and center console, but every time I shift to a "upper gear" like 1st, the shifter is touching the console and making a squeaking sound. Is this expected? I thought the classic shifter was supposed to fit under the stock boot?

2. With the WEVO shifter it's not incredibly hard to shift into 1st gear. Shifting to 2nd followed by 1st does the trick. What could this by? Worn coupler? Syncros? Oil?

Curious to know from others who have the classic shifter.

Thanks all!

/k

I have a Wevo on my G50. Installed in 2018. Zero issues.
I do not have a boot or the console.

Very interesting. Is this the classic shifter or the regular one?

That's the regular one. The classic has the cylindrical shift rod that fits inside the stock boot.

I have the same shifter as above in my '87, but I'm not currently running a console. I have the same issues as you with 1st gear being slightly tough to shift into, but it gets better when warm and the 2-1 will get you through it in a bind. I'm not sure if it's the transmission, but I can say that adjustments and fluids do play some affect here. Mine has 150k on it.

There is also adjustment in almost every attachment to the body for shifter and trans/engine. The shifter base has significant float at the 3 attach bolts. The shift coupler has some movement in the tunnel. The trans crossmember can float to the trans. The trans/engine can then float to the body.

If the shifter is riding the console in 1st gear, I'd suggest loosening the 3 bolts that hold the shifter base to the body and shifting the base aft 0.1 inches and re-tightening.

I bring up all the attach point float because I'd be fiddling with the shifter's position in space before thinking you have a mechanical trans problem.

Good luck!

You might reference this thread...

There are three bolts on the shifter housing and there is an official fore / aft adjustment spec for stock housing installation (see below). Nothing official for side to side adjustment for mounting the housing, but perhaps yours could benefit from some tweaking.

The center console interference is a known issue and happens with both versions of the WEVO. There's not much to be done about it, short of deleting the console. The shaft isn't the issue. The classic version shaft fits through the shift boot opening easily enough, it's the shifter mechanism itself, on both versions, that is a tight fit inside the boot and the console opening.

From LinkedIn thread...

As a result, I am going to swap the two shifters such that I use the JWest in my '87 with center console to remedy the fore / aft interference issue.

The JWest G50 shifter is currently out of production, but I spoke with them at Pelican's open house and they're amenable to producing an updated version if there's enough interest. I expressed my interest. If you're interested, please reach out to them directly to let them know...

Also, on the G50 shifter housing reinstallation, there is a 5mm adjustment spec between the piece that bolts to the selector rod and the trailing inner edge of the cast housing. See Kevin's response, post #2, here...

1988 G50 Shifter Alignment

This 5mm spec may not apply to aftermarket shift lever assemblies. Regardless, most Pelicans don't seem aware that there's an actual spec. Instead, they opt to just try and reinstall the housing as close to it's "before" position as possible.

From Kevin's above linked response...

Famoroso, thank you for pointing out the spec on the placement of the base - I didn't know that and I don't believe that ref is in the Bentley. I'll add this to the list of things to do while trying to get my console to work on G50 Wevo.
