OEM Relay vs URO

I recently replaced my URO dme relay as a preventative maintenance with an OEM relay, as well as doing a whole bunch of other stuff. Fuel lines, injectors, spark plugs etc etc.
(Big winter project) Also had Steve Wong retune the DME since I upgraded the exhaust system Scart per muffler and exhaust. Awesome set up for anyone thinking about it

This is where the problem started… my cold start up would stutter for 3-5 seconds and then hit its correct idle mark. Everything else was perfect. The Porsche runs great after warm up. It was driving me crazy.. couldn’t figure this **** out. Until this afternoon I decided to put back the URO relay and BAM!!! perfect cold start.

Why would an OEM DME relay not work correctly? Anyway I went ahead and ordered a DME relay from Focus 9.
Hope this helps anyone else out there with the same symptoms!!

Cheers

sounds like the OEM DME was defective, had a cold soldier joint that self-resolved once current passed through it.

Old school electronics. They all will fail eventually. I have a solid state aftermarket one and STILL keep a backup. Kind of like two layers of tin foil on my head under the ball cap.

Once upon a time the factory OEM parts were the best. Now Porsche sells some of the same garbage and poorly finished parts as aftermarket.

For sure the solid state relay from Focus 9 is a good option. Mine has been flawless.

They make the DME relays and if you need a proven oem style fuel pump relay for a 83 and earlier car 914rubber.com makes a really nice one that is better than the uro one.

Thank you, I looked at the website and it didn't indicate if it was the original design (likely sourced from China) versus a solid state relay?

Are you referring to the 914rubber one? It's my understanding they are US made. Mark the owner has a video of all the test cycles before failure as well.

I luckily have a spare red (original OEM) but its old and a solid state version would be a much better choice, i was unable to find any video on the 914rubber offering

From 1983 back to 1964 there is no need of a DME relay. It is like wanting a power steering pump for an early 911. 1984 was the first year of the DME, and of course the need for a DME relay.

Did you have the car running on stock chip and the SW? what did it do the exhaust sound with the SW chip? I have the same exhaust setup.

OEM stuff isn't necessarily superior as in don't assume it's fabbed by P. My two new red fuel pump relays ordered via the P mothership and picked up at the dealer are stamped "Made in China", and are 3-4 times the cost of the URO copies. Just buy a few UROs.
