915 - North-South Slop?

Video
Shift order: 3rd-1st-3rd

I've got an '81 911 SC with the original 915 transaxle in it. It's got a Wevo shifter installed, and I noticed recently that the fore-aft motion has quite a bit of slop... But only in 3rd, 4th, and 5th. I filmed a quick video showing the difference between 3rd and 1st gear. Is this normal, or do I have something worn in the tranny?

Possibly inside the transmission, but a bit hard to imagine unless for example the shift fork bolts fell out or the shift detents evaporated. If you can, check the action at the selector rod entering the transmission. There's a tool for this, you probably don't want to buy it, but it grabs the selector shaft and is great for bench-testing a serviced transmission.

More likely to be an issue outside the transmission.

Look at the ball cup plastic bushing at the bottom of the shift lever. If that is cracked or broken in half, that is what you will get. You can tell by looking at the coupler while moving the shift lever. If the lever moves but the coupler does not, it's most likely the ball cup bushing.

I just went out and looked at my Rennshift setup. When I am in 4th gear, I get about the same amount of free play you do in 3rd and 4th gear and in 1st gear. 1st gear has less free play than 3rd or 4th.

What I would do is make sure the shifter has almost no free play compared to what you see at the coupler at the back of the tunnel. There should be almost no play between what you do at the shift and see at the coupler.

Maybe grabbing at straws, but check the lock nuts on your travel stops at the base of the shifter. I had a similar thing happen and the lock nuts had loosened and the grub screws had backed themselves out with vibration...

Let's not forget that you want some free play there.....

The original shift coupler (under the cover on the floor between the back seats) has oval holes to provide north-south slop. If your shift coupler hasn't been updated, that's the first place to look.
