Thoughts On Oil Leak (Solved - Camshaft Housing End Plug)
The oil drop position leads me to believe its coming from above but can't find source? Rocker bushing & screw is dry. Can't see it when running because it runs down between the cooler & valve cover ever so slightly in that tight gap. It leaks a lot more then stops right when engine is turned off. May cut up a valve cover on that end so I can see it when running. Your thoughts? Thank you!

My 87 leaks there too, except on the driver side next to the chain housing. I have a drip pan under and live with it.

The triangle of death sits above there and could be leaking from there. It could also be seeping past the rocker shafts.
Let's hope its the upper valve cover or one of the gaskets on the top end.

There is a plug bolt with crush washer on the cam housing, opposite the fitting for the oil pressure feed line. You can check that from the top while its running with a mirror.

That would be fantastic. Been chasing leak for a while. Until drop was found looks like valve cover leak. Really annoying. Thank you

Update: Leak Solved
It was the Camshaft Housing End Plug. Pulled cooler with engine in. Was easier than I thought it would be. Plug was damaged on bottom. That made it easy to remove. New cap on order.

Good question! Engine rebuilt recently. Two thoughts how this happened. During re-build or it was like this but sealed with some type of sealant. Sealant was inadvertently removed during rebuild cleaning. I do not re-call this leak before rebuild but barely ran the car at that point.
Engine was in rough shape when I purchased car. Many broken head studs. Look what someone did to the bypass valve. Inserted pipe to keep closed. I added intercooler & and blow off valve now but did rebuild factory bypass with correct spring so it will be ready to return to stock if needed. |

Plug is in. Leak solved. Used large socket to press in. When close to flush used flat stock steel so plug didn’t go in passed flush. Didn’t have Loctite 574. Used Permatex anaerobic gasket maker. Available @ most auto parts stores. Believe it's actually Loctite 518(518 was supposed to supersede 574?). Now on to tuning with BL WUR. If you’re going to keep CIS and want mild mods get a BL WUR. Did some tuning last year and worked beautifully. Scavenge pump appears to be leaking along with other things…. but these are small drops here and there. With the big leak solved I plan on putting some miles on it. Crazy that it hasn’t been driven much. 1977 under 50k. I wanted the full 930 experience forever and finally got it. Driving is incredible, very nimble with good power. Sport seats and entire interior imho has aged perfect. Nothing like the smell of these aged interiors. Call me crazy but I like it… Love the car the way it is so may not retore for a while or ever?

Porsche didn't use sealant on that end cap, did it? Mine have all behaved, so I just leave them alone - no reason to remove unless you are swapping sides with the housing. But good it was a simple fix once you got access.

Bill - with the cam out, you can use a long rod to punch it out. Or you can (again, with cam out) drill a small hole and use a slide hammer.
I suppose you could weld a stud to it and use that to pull it out without removing the cam. Not sure if having oil between it and the cam end plus the heat of welding might cause an issue, though probably not something serious. |
