ITBs and crankcase ventalation

What are you others out there with ITBs doing for crank ventilation?
I'm currently running the vent to the oil tank but haven't decided what to do with the other line on the oil tank that used to run to the intake.

I could run a catch can to that but would there be any issues just slapping a filter on the hose barb on the oil tank?

I'd love to see everyone else's setup if you have pics.

Plastic can off an '88. Vent comes off the top and goes down thru tin and exits in the back. I am going to build an aly cover that goes over the filter but just open on the end to keep it clean. Drain hose off the bottom of the can just has a aly plug in it that I tapped for 1/4-20 bolt to drain it.

I wouldnt recommend just a filter if you like a clean engine bay. If you just slap a filter it will slowly apply oil to your engine compartment on that side.

Cleanest and healthiest is to run another hose from the tank vent back to the right-side air cleaner. This will keep the oil mist away and if you're running heat, you won't be asphyxiating yourself!

If you're running individual screens on top of exposed velocity stacks this obviously won't work. So, consider drilling a hole into the fender well and mount a small air filter in the fender well. Get a filter like this with an incorporated sheet metal deflector so the tire doesn't ruin it with flying road grime and rocks.

.... and orient the vapor/oil outlet (filter) so gravity routes liquid oil back to the tank, not onto your sanitary engine or worse, the road under your tires.

I put one of these in my left rear wheel well and routed a hose with fittings from oil tank breather. NO oil mist in engine compartment

The volume of oil mist or liquid oil from the "puke" can depends on many factors including:
- Oil tank level
- Amount of blowby
- Cornering loads
- Engine operating rpm

Under certain cornering conditions, sustained high G loads can force oil up against the wall of the engine oil tank. Sufficient high rpm blowby can then push liquid oil out of the tank into the puke tank. Thus, tanks should have enough volume to contain sufficient liquid oil as well as help separate vapor/blowby and oil. Large inlet/outlet hoses and physical oil traps help reduce vapor velocity and the chance of liquid oil blowing onto the engine or ground.

A drain system and a translucent container to monitor liquid level are nice-to-have features.

We normally run a catch can on these set ups with a filter. Most "rain hat" style air filter set ups have a provision to route the vapor back into the filter area as well, though, we haven't done that.

Like Sherwood said, there are a few factors that dictate how much vapour/oil your application will see.

Never have the vent below the top of the oil tank....you want anything that might splash out/blow out of the tank into the vent line to feed back into it.

Case to tank, tank to catcher with breather, found it a have to with tracking & cornering over 1G, 3.6 conversion with 55MM ITB's.

Some good solutions here! Thanks for sharing.
Is anyone using a coarse steel wool filter inside the hose or in the tank to filter out oil? I've seen this on some OE setups and it seems to limit the amount of oil that makes it to the catch can.

Been running a pretty normal setup with the oil tank feeding an aftermarket, purpose made catchcan in the right side of the engine bay. Has a filter on top and I do get some odor with heat but not bad.

Below is a recent drain of the can. About 1 ounce came out. This was about 2k miles worth and includes an autocross. Doesn't do much to convey the amazing aroma! That liquid smells just like homemade moonshine!
Nothing resembling oil which i guess is a good thing.

Figured I'd post the contents incase anyone else wanted to compare or see what was being caught.

it smells a little bit sweet and alcohol-y. it isn't flammable however. So im thinking mostly water/condensation and maybe some blowby fumes and e10 mixed in.

Harpo,
You can get these at Jegs and Earl's, but Summit also has many to choose from.
