engine thermostat - what temp should it open at?
I tested the thermostat that's mounted on the engine block and it opened at ~192°. What temperature should it open at? Thanks!

yeah, I'm curious too.
I bet that's correct, because that's also what the external opens at, so if the internal cooler doesn't keep it at that temp then the external (hopefully) will.

I would've expected that it would open at a lower temp. Then, if the internal cooler can't keep up, then the external thermostat would open at a somewhat higher temp and let oil flow through the aux. cooler.
When GIBSON did this test, he had one open at 168°. I would think this is more reasonable.

Jim,
I suggest soaking the thermostat overnight in Berryman's B-12 Chemtool to loosen/remove any varnish or deposits ... heated ultrasonic bath at 120° F would be ideal. Then try a retest to see if the opening temp has changed. I suspect that30 years in a used oil bath can leave some serious varnish deposits.

I'll give that a try, Warren. I'd hate to have to replace it as those t-stats are pricey. Thanks!

My external thermostat opens at about an indicated 180 (on a numerical gauge), and this is well after the internal thermostat has opened and is already circulating hot oil.

I just found the spec...182°. I'm soaking it in Berryman's B-12 Chemtool and will re-test it tomorrow morning.

It's still opening in the low to mid 190°s. I guess I need to open my wallet up some more.
