911 3.2 Weird Engine Sound at Cold Start (Video)

Hi Team,

My 3.2 has developed a weird sound at start up - Video Link Here -

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/GkJfe7jEEpo

To me it sounds like the noise is a pulley bearing.

I thought perhaps it was the AC or Alternator bearing going, but when putting my ear to them with a screwdriver, it sounds smooth.

Also to note, after 10min of driving the sound goes away. As its not a metallic sound, I am scratching my head as to what it is.

Any help on this? Has anyone had this before? Sound is definitely coming from the centre of the engine and is loudest near the fan.

Thanks.

I would pull all the belts and run it up and see if the noise persists and work back from there. Probably the only way to determine the fault if any.

@OSC911 Thanks, I have gone and done that, and luckily the sound has gone Now my next task is to isolate between the alternator and the AC. The alternator though when spinning the shaft definitely makes a much worse sound. How much are new alternators going for these days haha

If it is the alternator there is a guy in Brisbane that makes new alternators using all new Bosch parts and machined housing assembly. They are called K3 i think if I remember correctly. I have one in my 3.0 litre and they are a work of art - beautifully made. Let me know if you need for me to chase up the contact number.
Hopefully it is just belt noise which I have heard similar to yours. I would try a set of belts first.

You should be able to find a local place to rebuild the alternator as well...

Cheers

Hi LBEEMING- I listened to your video link- it does sound similar to what I experienced in 2019.

As a further example, I've got Forum member 911 Euro's video of his noise posted in my link...

1986 Alternator replacement- Rumbling noise now gone, hidden bolt on A/C plate

My issue did turn out to be the alternator bearings- hope this helps!

Thanks, appreciate it

I loosened the alternator belt a bit and the noise went. So I am guessing new bearings are required soon!
